The Church is not just a building — it is a community of believers. Christians believe they are called to serve others and make a positive difference in their local communities. This lesson explores how churches fulfil this calling through worship, social action, education, and pastoral care.
The word "church" (Greek: ekklesia) means "assembly" or "gathering." It refers not to a building but to the people of God — the community of believers.
"For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them." (Matthew 18:20)
| Meaning | Explanation |
|---|---|
| The local church | A specific congregation that meets in a particular building or place |
| The universal Church | The worldwide body of all Christians across all denominations and countries |
The primary function of the local church is to provide a place for communal worship:
Churches play an important educational role:
Churches provide emotional and spiritual support to their members and the wider community:
Christians believe they are called to serve the poor and vulnerable:
"Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me." (Matthew 25:40)
| Activity | Example |
|---|---|
| Food banks | Churches are major providers of food banks in the UK (e.g. the Trussell Trust was founded by Christians) |
| Homeless shelters | Many churches run night shelters and soup kitchens |
| Debt counselling | Organisations like Christians Against Poverty (CAP) help people manage debt |
| Parent and toddler groups | Providing community spaces for families |
| Youth clubs | Safe spaces for young people to socialise |

Exam Tip: Be able to give specific examples of how churches serve their communities. Food banks, homeless shelters, and debt counselling are strong examples that show faith in action.
Many Christians believe the Church has a duty to speak out against injustice and work for a fairer society:
"He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God." (Micah 6:8)
"Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress." (James 1:27)
Churches often play a role in reconciliation — bringing people together and resolving conflicts:
| Arguments For | Arguments Against |
|---|---|
| Churches provide vital community services (food banks, counselling) | Church attendance in the UK is declining |
| Faith provides meaning and purpose for millions | Some see the Church as outdated or irrelevant |
| Churches promote moral values and social cohesion | The Church has been criticised for some of its teachings (e.g. on sexuality) |
| Churches are often the only community hub in rural areas | Some argue secular organisations can do the same work |
Street Pastors is an initiative where trained Christian volunteers patrol city centres at night to:
Street Pastors operates in over 300 locations across the UK and has been widely praised by police and local authorities.
The local church plays a vital role in communities across the UK and around the world. Through worship, education, pastoral care, and social action, churches put Christian beliefs into practice and serve the needs of their communities. Whether through food banks, youth work, or street pastors, the Church demonstrates that faith is not just about beliefs — it is about actions.
