AQA GCSE Spanish Vocabulary and Topics: A Complete Revision Guide
AQA GCSE Spanish Vocabulary and Topics: A Complete Revision Guide
Vocabulary is the foundation of every skill tested in GCSE Spanish. Without a strong word bank, you cannot understand what you hear in the listening exam, decode what you read on the page, express yourself clearly in the speaking assessment, or write accurately under timed conditions. The AQA GCSE Spanish specification (8698) is organised around three broad themes, and the vocabulary you need maps directly onto them.
This guide breaks down the key vocabulary and phrases for each theme, explains how to use opinion phrases, connectives, and time markers to push your grade higher, and provides practical strategies for expanding your vocabulary efficiently.
How the AQA Specification is Structured
AQA GCSE Spanish is assessed through four papers -- listening, speaking, reading, and writing -- each worth 25% of the final grade. All four papers draw on vocabulary and topics from the same three themes:
- Theme 1: Identity and culture
- Theme 2: Local, national, international and global areas of interest
- Theme 3: Current and future study and employment
You need to be comfortable using vocabulary from every theme across all four skills. A question in the listening paper might test Theme 3 vocabulary, while the writing paper might ask you to write about Theme 1. There is no way to predict which theme will appear where, so thorough coverage is essential.
Theme 1: Identity and Culture
Theme 1 covers the personal and social side of life -- who you are, the people around you, your daily routine, what you eat, and how you celebrate. This theme tends to feel the most accessible because it relates directly to your own experience.

Boosting Your Grade: Opinion Phrases, Connectives, and Time Markers
Knowing vocabulary is necessary, but it is not sufficient on its own. To reach the higher mark bands in speaking and writing, you need to show that you can express and justify opinions, link your ideas together, and refer to different time frames. Examiners are looking for range, accuracy, and the ability to communicate complex ideas.
Opinion Phrases
Using a variety of opinion phrases shows the examiner you can do more than just state facts. Move beyond "me gusta" and use:
- Creo que... -- I believe that...
- En mi opinion... -- In my opinion...
- Me parece que... -- It seems to me that...
- Pienso que... -- I think that...
- Estoy convencido/a de que... -- I am convinced that...
- Desde mi punto de vista... -- From my point of view...
- Lo que mas me importa es... -- What matters most to me is...
- No estoy de acuerdo con la idea de que... -- I do not agree with the idea that...
Always follow an opinion with a reason. The structure "opinion + porque + reason" is the minimum. For higher marks, add a second layer: "opinion + porque + reason + ademas + further point."
Connectives
Connectives are the words and phrases that join your ideas together. Without them, your Spanish reads as a list of separate sentences. With them, it flows and demonstrates control of the language.
- sin embargo -- however
- ademas -- furthermore / moreover
- por un lado... por otro lado -- on one hand... on the other hand
- aunque -- although
- no obstante -- nevertheless
- por lo tanto -- therefore
- en cambio -- on the other hand / by contrast
- asi que -- so / therefore
- tanto... como... -- both... and...
- mientras que -- whereas / while
- a pesar de que -- despite the fact that
For example, instead of writing two short sentences, combine them: "Me gusta vivir en la ciudad porque hay mucho que hacer. Sin embargo, a veces echo de menos la tranquilidad del campo." (I like living in the city because there is a lot to do. However, sometimes I miss the peace of the countryside.)
Time Markers
Referring to different time frames is one of the clearest ways to demonstrate range. Even when the question asks about the present, a strong answer often includes a reference to the past or the future for contrast.
Past:
- el ano pasado -- last year
- cuando era joven -- when I was young
- hace dos anos -- two years ago
- antes -- before / previously
- de pequeno/a -- as a child
Present:
- hoy en dia -- nowadays
- actualmente -- currently
- normalmente -- normally / usually
- a menudo -- often
- de vez en cuando -- from time to time
Future:
- en el futuro -- in the future
- el ano que viene -- next year
- dentro de cinco anos -- in five years' time
- algun dia -- one day
- cuando sea mayor -- when I am older
Using time markers naturally triggers different tenses. "Cuando era joven" leads to the imperfect, "el ano pasado" leads to the preterite, and "en el futuro" leads to the future or conditional. This makes tense use feel organic rather than forced.
Tips for Expanding Your Vocabulary Effectively
Knowing that you need vocabulary is one thing. Building it efficiently is another. These strategies are supported by research on memory and language learning.
Use Active Recall, Not Passive Review
Reading through a vocabulary list and hoping words will stick is one of the least effective revision methods. Instead, test yourself. Cover the English column and try to produce the Spanish from memory, then swap. Flashcards work well for this because they force you to retrieve the word before checking the answer.
Learn Words in Context
Individual words are harder to remember than words embedded in a phrase or sentence. Instead of learning "el medio ambiente" in isolation, learn it within a sentence you might actually use: "El medio ambiente es un tema que me preocupa mucho." When you recall the sentence, the vocabulary comes with it, along with grammar and structure.
Group Vocabulary by Topic
The AQA specification is already organised by theme, so use that structure. When you revise, focus on one sub-topic at a time -- family, school, holidays, environment -- and learn all the relevant vocabulary together. This creates mental associations between related words, which makes recall faster and more reliable.
Use Spaced Repetition
Spaced repetition is the practice of reviewing material at increasing intervals. You review new words frequently at first, then less often as they move into long-term memory. This is one of the most powerful techniques for vocabulary retention and is far more efficient than cramming.
Write Your Own Sentences
After learning a set of new words, write five to ten sentences using them. This forces you to think about how the words fit into real Spanish and helps you notice things like gender agreements, verb conjugations, and prepositions that you might miss when just reading a list.
Practise in All Four Skills
A word you can recognise in reading is not necessarily a word you can produce in writing or say aloud in speaking. Practise vocabulary across all four skills: read it, listen for it, write it, and say it. This builds a deeper, more flexible knowledge of each word.
Prepare with LearningBro
LearningBro's GCSE Spanish courses are built around the three AQA themes and test your vocabulary, grammar, and comprehension through active recall and spaced repetition. Each course targets a specific theme so you can focus your revision where you need it most.
- GCSE Spanish: Identity and Daily Life -- covers family, relationships, daily routine, food, festivals, customs, and traditions
- GCSE Spanish: Leisure, Travel, and Culture -- covers home and town, holidays, travel, the environment, and social issues
- GCSE Spanish: Society, Work, and the World -- covers school life, post-16 options, jobs, career aspirations, and global issues
Work through all three courses to ensure full coverage of the specification, then revisit the topics where you are least confident.
Good luck with your revision.
