This lesson covers reflex actions and the reflex arc as required by the AQA GCSE Combined Science Trilogy specification (8464). Reflex actions are a very commonly examined topic — you need to be able to describe the pathway of a reflex arc, explain why reflex actions are important, and identify the role of each component.
A reflex action is a rapid, automatic (involuntary) response to a stimulus. Reflex actions:
| Reflex | Stimulus | Response | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Withdrawing hand from a hot object | Heat/pain | Hand pulls away (muscles contract) | Prevents burns |
| Pupil reflex | Bright light | Pupil constricts (circular muscles contract) | Protects the retina |
| Knee-jerk reflex | Tap below the kneecap | Lower leg kicks forward | Tests spinal cord function |
| Dropping a sharp object | Pain in hand | Hand opens (muscles relax) | Prevents further injury |
The reflex arc is the nerve pathway that carries out a reflex action. It involves the following components in this order:
flowchart LR
A["Stimulus\n(e.g. hot object)"] --> B["Receptor\n(pain receptor in skin)"]
B --> C["Sensory Neurone"]
C --> D["Relay Neurone\n(in spinal cord)"]
D --> E["Motor Neurone"]
E --> F["Effector\n(muscle)"]
F --> G["Response\n(hand withdraws)"]
Exam Tip: In the exam, you may be asked to label a diagram of a reflex arc. Practise drawing the arc and labelling every component — receptor, sensory neurone, synapse, relay neurone, synapse, motor neurone, effector.
There are two synapses in a typical three-neurone reflex arc:
At each synapse, the same chemical transmission process occurs:
Reflex actions are faster than voluntary responses because:
This speed is vital for survival. If you touch a hot pan, the reflex withdrawal happens in approximately 0.5 seconds — much faster than a conscious response.
Reflex actions bypass the conscious areas of the brain. However, you often become aware of the reflex after it has happened, because some impulses are also sent up the spinal cord to the brain.
| Feature | Voluntary Response | Reflex Response |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | Slower | Very fast |
| Conscious control | Yes | No |
| Processed by | Brain (conscious areas) | Spinal cord (or lower brain) |
| Purpose | Deliberate action | Protection from harm |
| Example | Picking up a pen | Withdrawing hand from flame |
Describe the pathway of a reflex arc when a person treads on a sharp object.
Model answer:
A child accidentally touches a hot radiator. Describe the reflex arc that causes the child to withdraw their hand. Include the role of each component. [6 marks]
