AQA GCSE Design and Technology (8552), Section 3.3, requires you to study influential design companies and understand how their approaches to design, manufacturing and marketing have shaped the industry. You should be able to discuss at least two companies in detail. This lesson examines several companies that have had a significant impact on design and technology.
Founded in 1976 by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne. Headquarters: Cupertino, California, USA. Apple is one of the world's most valuable companies, known for its focus on design, user experience and ecosystem integration.
| Product | Design Feature | Significance |
|---|---|---|
| iMac G3 (1998) | Translucent coloured polycarbonate casing | Transformed computers from beige boxes into desirable consumer objects |
| iPod (2001) | Click wheel interface, white earbuds | Made portable music mainstream; iconic minimalist design |
| iPhone (2007) | Multi-touch screen, no physical keyboard | Revolutionised the smartphone industry; eliminated the need for buttons |
| MacBook Air (2008–present) | Unibody aluminium construction milled from a single block | Pioneered ultra-thin laptop design; CNC milling for premium feel |
| AirPods (2016) | Truly wireless earbuds, instant pairing | Set the standard for wireless audio accessories |
AQA Exam Tip: Apple is an excellent case study for questions about aesthetics, user-centred design, manufacturing processes (CNC milling, anodising) and ethical/environmental considerations. Be prepared to discuss both positives and negatives.
Founded in 1991 by Sir James Dyson. Headquarters: Malmesbury, Wiltshire, UK (with major operations in Singapore and Malaysia). Dyson is an engineering-led technology company.
| Product | Innovation | Impact |
|---|---|---|
| DC01 vacuum (1993) | Bagless cyclonic technology | Eliminated the need for replacement bags; maintained constant suction |
| Airblade hand dryer (2006) | Sheet of air at 690 km/h | Dries hands in 10 seconds; 80% less energy than warm-air dryers |
| Supersonic hairdryer (2016) | V9 digital motor in the handle; intelligent heat control | Lighter, quieter and less damaging to hair than conventional dryers |
| Corrale straightener (2020) | Flexing copper alloy plates | Reduces heat damage by 50% compared to rigid plates |
| Dyson Zone (2022) | Air-purifying headphones | Addressed two problems (noise and air quality) in one product |
Founded in 1969 in Dublin, Ireland (originally as Penneys). Primark is a fast fashion retailer with over 400 stores across Europe and the USA, owned by Associated British Foods.
| Issue | Primark's Position |
|---|---|
| Labour practices | Member of the Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI); conducts factory audits; paid compensation to Rana Plaza victims |
| Environmental impact | Fast fashion contributes to textile waste; low prices encourage overconsumption |
| Sustainability initiatives | Primark Cares range uses recycled polyester and organic cotton; committed to making all clothing from recycled or sustainable materials by 2030 |
| Circular fashion | Partnered with Oxfam for clothing recycling; introduced textile-to-textile recycling research |
AQA Exam Tip: Primark is a useful case study for discussing the tension between affordability and sustainability. Exam questions may ask you to evaluate whether fast fashion can be ethical. A balanced answer discussing both positives (affordable clothing, ethical trading commitments) and negatives (overconsumption, textile waste) will score highest.
