Poetry can appear in the CEM 11+ exam, and many students find it the trickiest type of passage to understand. But with the right approach, poetry comprehension becomes much easier — and even enjoyable. In this lesson, you will learn how to read, understand, and answer questions about poems.
Poetry is different from prose (stories and articles) in several important ways:
| Feature | Prose | Poetry |
|---|---|---|
| Layout | Written in sentences and paragraphs | Written in lines and verses (stanzas) |
| Language | Usually straightforward (though it can be descriptive) | Often compressed, with every word chosen very carefully |
| Sound | Not usually designed to be read aloud | Often uses rhyme, rhythm, and sound effects |
| Meaning | Usually quite direct | Can be layered — the surface meaning may hide a deeper meaning |
In the CEM exam, you might be given a poem you have never seen before and asked to answer questions about it. The poem could be modern or classic, funny or serious, short or long.
Look at how the poem is organised:
Imagery is when the poet uses language to create a picture in your mind. Look for:
| Technique | What it does | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Simile | Compares two things using "like" or "as" | "The moon hung like a lantern" |
| Metaphor | Says something IS something else | "The sea was a sheet of glass" |
| Personification | Gives human qualities to non-human things | "The wind whispered through the trees" |
| Onomatopoeia | A word that sounds like what it describes | "The fire crackled and hissed" |
What feeling does the poem create? Is it cheerful, melancholy, angry, peaceful, mysterious? The mood is created through word choice, imagery, and rhythm.
What is the poem really about? Sometimes the surface topic (a tree, a storm, a journey) is actually a symbol for something deeper (growth, anger, life).
Get a general sense of what it is about. Do not worry if you do not understand every line.
This time, pay attention to the language. Underline or mentally note any interesting words, images, or phrases.
