Welcome to the first lesson in your CEM 11+ Verbal Reasoning course! In this lesson, you will master synonyms and antonyms — and, crucially, learn how to answer these questions quickly and accurately under CEM exam conditions.
The CEM (Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring) exam works differently from other 11+ exams. Verbal Reasoning questions are interleaved with English comprehension and sometimes even maths. You will not have a separate VR paper — instead, VR questions appear mixed in with other question types. This means:
The good news is that synonym and antonym questions can be answered very quickly once you know the technique.
A synonym is a word that has the same or very similar meaning as another word.
| Word | Synonym |
|---|---|
| happy | joyful |
| brave | courageous |
| begin | commence |
| large | enormous |
| angry | furious |
| quick | rapid |
| calm | serene |
| difficult | challenging |
CEM tip: CEM exams often use more advanced vocabulary than other 11+ exams. You may see words like "benevolent" (kind), "tenacious" (determined), or "tranquil" (peaceful).
An antonym is a word that means the opposite of another word.
| Word | Antonym |
|---|---|
| ancient | modern |
| generous | selfish |
| expand | contract |
| brave | cowardly |
| create | destroy |
| visible | hidden |
| temporary | permanent |
| rigid | flexible |

Question: Find the two words closest in meaning.
cautious reckless prudent swift timid
Step-by-step:
CEM exams are known for using harder vocabulary than GL exams. Here are some advanced synonym groups to learn:
elated, jubilant, ecstatic, euphoric, blissful, exuberant, buoyant
melancholy, despondent, forlorn, disconsolate, wretched, mournful, sombre
valiant, intrepid, dauntless, audacious, gallant, resolute, undaunted
irate, incensed, livid, enraged, indignant, infuriated, wrathful
exquisite, stunning, resplendent, magnificent, radiant, sublime, splendid
Knowing common prefixes helps you work out antonyms in seconds:
| Prefix | Effect | Example |
|---|---|---|
| un- | reverses meaning | unhappy, uncertain |
| dis- | reverses meaning | disagree, dislike |
| im- | not | impossible, impatient |
| in- | not | invisible, incorrect |
| ir- | not | irregular, irresponsible |
| il- | not | illegal, illogical |
| mis- | wrongly | misunderstand, mislead |
| anti- | against | antisocial, anticlockwise |
Speed trick: If you see a word starting with un-, dis-, im-, in-, ir-, or il-, the antonym is often the word without the prefix.
The word light can mean "not heavy" (antonym: heavy) or "not dark" (antonym: dark). Read the context carefully.
If asked for a synonym of ocean, do not pick fish or wave. These are related to the ocean but do not mean the same thing. The correct answer would be sea.
