Synonyms and Antonyms at Speed

Synonyms and Antonyms at Speed

Welcome to the first lesson in your CEM 11+ Verbal Reasoning course! In this lesson, you will master synonyms and antonyms — and, crucially, learn how to answer these questions quickly and accurately under CEM exam conditions.

Why Speed Matters in the CEM Exam

The CEM (Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring) exam works differently from other 11+ exams. Verbal Reasoning questions are interleaved with English comprehension and sometimes even maths. You will not have a separate VR paper — instead, VR questions appear mixed in with other question types. This means:

  • You cannot predict when a synonym or antonym question will appear.
  • You must switch quickly between different types of thinking.
  • There is significant time pressure — you may have less than 30 seconds per question.

The good news is that synonym and antonym questions can be answered very quickly once you know the technique.

What Is a Synonym?

A synonym is a word that has the same or very similar meaning as another word.

Word Synonym
happy joyful
brave courageous
begin commence
large enormous
angry furious
quick rapid
calm serene
difficult challenging

CEM tip: CEM exams often use more advanced vocabulary than other 11+ exams. You may see words like "benevolent" (kind), "tenacious" (determined), or "tranquil" (peaceful).

What Is an Antonym?

An antonym is a word that means the opposite of another word.

Word Antonym
ancient modern
generous selfish
expand contract
brave cowardly
create destroy
visible hidden
temporary permanent
rigid flexible

Worked Example 1: Quick Synonym

Question: Which word is closest in meaning to persistent?

A) lazy B) determined C) gentle D) hasty

Speed strategy:

  1. Read the target word: persistent — means keeping going, not giving up.
  2. Scan the options quickly — does one jump out?
  3. B) determined — this means having a strong will to continue. Match!
  4. Answer: B) determined (aim for under 15 seconds)

Worked Example 2: Quick Antonym

Question: Which word is most opposite in meaning to timid?

A) shy B) quiet C) bold D) gentle

Speed strategy:

  1. Timid means shy and lacking courage.
  2. You need the opposite — someone who is NOT shy.
  3. C) bold — means brave and confident. That is the opposite.
  4. Answer: C) bold

Worked Example 3: CEM-Style Synonym Pair

In some CEM questions, you are given a list of words and must find the two that are closest in meaning.

Question: Find the two words closest in meaning.

cautious reckless prudent swift timid

Step-by-step:

  1. cautious = careful
  2. reckless = careless (opposite of cautious)
  3. prudent = careful, sensible
  4. swift = fast
  5. timid = shy
  6. cautious and prudent both mean careful.
  7. Answer: cautious and prudent

Advanced Vocabulary for CEM Exams

CEM exams are known for using harder vocabulary than GL exams. Here are some advanced synonym groups to learn:

Words Meaning "Happy"

elated, jubilant, ecstatic, euphoric, blissful, exuberant, buoyant

Words Meaning "Sad"

melancholy, despondent, forlorn, disconsolate, wretched, mournful, sombre

Words Meaning "Brave"

valiant, intrepid, dauntless, audacious, gallant, resolute, undaunted

Words Meaning "Angry"

irate, incensed, livid, enraged, indignant, infuriated, wrathful

Words Meaning "Beautiful"

exquisite, stunning, resplendent, magnificent, radiant, sublime, splendid

Prefix and Suffix Shortcuts

Knowing common prefixes helps you work out antonyms in seconds:

Prefix Effect Example
un- reverses meaning unhappy, uncertain
dis- reverses meaning disagree, dislike
im- not impossible, impatient
in- not invisible, incorrect
ir- not irregular, irresponsible
il- not illegal, illogical
mis- wrongly misunderstand, mislead
anti- against antisocial, anticlockwise

Speed trick: If you see a word starting with un-, dis-, im-, in-, ir-, or il-, the antonym is often the word without the prefix.

Common CEM Traps

Trap 1: Words That Sound Similar

  • accept (receive) vs except (leave out)
  • affect (change) vs effect (result)
  • principal (head teacher) vs principle (rule or belief)

Trap 2: Multiple Meanings

The word light can mean "not heavy" (antonym: heavy) or "not dark" (antonym: dark). Read the context carefully.

Trap 3: Related but Not Synonymous

If asked for a synonym of ocean, do not pick fish or wave. These are related to the ocean but do not mean the same thing. The correct answer would be sea.

Speed Drill Strategy

To build speed for the CEM exam, practise like this:

  1. Set a timer for 5 minutes.
  2. Answer as many synonym/antonym questions as you can.
  3. Do not spend more than 20 seconds on any single question.
  4. If stuck, make your best guess and move on.
  5. Check your answers and note any words you did not know.
  6. Add unknown words to a vocabulary notebook and review weekly.

Quick Self-Test

Try these in your head — aim for under 10 seconds each:

  1. Synonym of courageous? (brave, fearless, valiant)
  2. Antonym of generous? (mean, selfish, stingy)
  3. Synonym of tranquil? (calm, peaceful, serene)
  4. Antonym of temporary? (permanent, lasting, enduring)

Summary

  • A synonym is a word with the same or similar meaning.
  • An antonym is a word with the opposite meaning.
  • CEM exams use harder vocabulary and give you less time than other 11+ exams.
  • Learn prefix shortcuts (un-, dis-, im-, in-) to identify antonyms quickly.
  • Watch out for traps: similar-sounding words, multiple meanings, and related words.
  • Speed is essential — practise answering in under 20 seconds per question.
  • Build your vocabulary every week with a notebook and flashcards.
