The CSSE 11+ exam is unique because it uses a two-paper format: one English paper and one Maths paper. Unlike GL or CEM exams, which may test multiple subjects in a single sitting, the CSSE gives you a dedicated paper for each subject. This lesson explains how to manage your energy, focus, and strategy across both papers.
| Paper | Subject | Time | Content |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 | English | Approximately 60 minutes | Comprehension, SPaG, Extended Writing |
| Paper 2 | Mathematics | Approximately 60 minutes | Arithmetic, Problem Solving, Reasoning |
The two papers may be taken on the same day with a break in between, or on different days depending on the school. Either way, you need to be prepared for both.
Sitting two exams requires mental stamina. Even if you are brilliant at both subjects, tiredness and loss of focus can reduce your performance on the second paper. Here is how to manage this:
If both papers are on the same day with a break:
The CSSE English paper has three distinct sections. Each requires a different skill set.
| Strategy | Detail |
|---|---|
| Read the passage twice | First for understanding, second for detail |
| Read all questions before answering | This tells you what to look for in the passage |
| Underline key phrases | These become your evidence in answers |
| Answer retrieval questions first | These are quickest — find the fact and write it down |
| Leave inference questions for later | These require more thought and are worth more marks |
| Strategy | Detail |
|---|---|
| Read each sentence in your head | Hearing the sentence helps you spot errors |
| Check for common traps | Its/it's, their/there/they're, could of (should be "could have") |
| Do not overthink | Your first instinct on spelling is usually correct |
| Strategy | Detail |
|---|---|
| Plan for 3 minutes | Use the five-finger plan or bullet points |
| Write for 14 minutes | Follow your plan, do not change direction mid-story |
| Check for 3 minutes | Fix spelling errors and add any missing punctuation |
| Choose the prompt you feel most confident about | Do not pick the one that sounds "harder" to impress the examiner |
The CSSE Maths paper tests both mechanical skills (arithmetic) and thinking skills (problem solving and reasoning).
