The CSSE 11+ maths paper is packed with questions set in real-life contexts: shopping, travel, recipes, wages, and more. These questions test your ability to apply maths skills to practical situations. This lesson covers the key types of money and real-life problems you will encounter, with plenty of worked examples.
| Fact | |
|---|---|
| £1 = 100p | |
| Always line up the decimal point when adding or subtracting money | |
| Write money answers with exactly 2 decimal places (e.g. £3.50, not £3.5) |
A book costs £8.75 and a pen costs £2.49. What is the total cost?
Ella has £50. She spends £23.67. How much does she have left?
Worked Example: Tom buys 3 sandwiches at £3.85 each. He pays with a £20 note. How much change does he get?
Step 1: Total cost = 3 × £3.85 = £11.55
Step 2: Change = £20.00 - £11.55 = £8.45
CSSE Tip: On the CSSE, change questions almost always require you to calculate the total first, then subtract from the amount paid. Watch for questions that ask you to buy different quantities of different items.
These are classic CSSE questions. You calculate the unit price (price per single item) and compare.
Shop A: 4 oranges for £2.20. Shop B: 6 oranges for £3.00. Which is better value?
Small box: 200 g of cereal for £1.60. Medium box: 500 g for £3.50. Large box: 1 kg for £6.40. Which is the best value?
Profit is the difference between what you sell for and what you paid.
Profit = Selling price - Cost price
Loss occurs when the selling price is less than the cost price.
A trader buys 60 mugs at £2.50 each. She sells 45 at £4.00 each and the remaining 15 at £1.50 each (at a discount). What is her overall profit?
Step 1: Total cost = 60 × £2.50 = £150.00
Step 2: Income from 45 mugs = 45 × £4.00 = £180.00
Step 3: Income from 15 mugs = 15 × £1.50 = £22.50
Step 4: Total income = £180.00 + £22.50 = £202.50
Step 5: Profit = £202.50 - £150.00 = £52.50
Find 15% of £80
A coat costs £60. The price increases by 20%. What is the new price?
A laptop costs £450. It is reduced by 15%. What is the sale price?
