This lesson covers content statement L1.21: spelling words used most often in work, study, and daily life, including some specialist words. Spelling matters in the exam — it is part of the SPaG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar) marks, which make up about 40% of the writing marks. The good news is that most spelling errors involve a small number of commonly confused words, and with practice, you can get them right every time.
This lesson focuses on the words that cause the most mistakes, gives you strategies to remember tricky spellings, and builds your confidence with workplace vocabulary. You do not need perfect spelling to pass, but every word you spell correctly earns you marks.
These words cause more mistakes than any others in Functional Skills exams. Learn these and you will avoid the most common errors.
| Word | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| There | A place, or used to introduce ("there is") | The fire exit is over there. There are three forms to complete. |
| Their | Belonging to them | The staff left their coats in the office. |
| They're | Short for "they are" | They're arriving at 10am. (They are arriving at 10am.) |
Memory trick: "They're" has an apostrophe because a letter is missing (the "a" from "are"). "Their" contains "heir" — an heir inherits, which means it belongs to someone. "There" contains "here" — it is about a place.
| Word | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Your | Belonging to you | Please bring your ID badge. |
| You're | Short for "you are" | You're welcome to attend the meeting. |
Memory trick: If you can replace the word with "you are" and it still makes sense, use "you're". If not, use "your".
| Word | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| To | Direction, or part of a verb | I walked to the office. I need to finish the report. |
| Too | Also, or excessively | I am coming too. The room is too hot. |
| Two | The number 2 | There are two forms to complete. |
Memory trick: "Too" has too many o's — it means "too much" or "also". "Two" is the number — think of "twin" (tw-).
| Word | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Where | A place (asking or telling) | Where is the meeting room? |
| Were | Past tense of "are" | We were at the training day yesterday. |
| Wear | To put on clothing | Please wear your safety equipment. |
| We're | Short for "we are" | We're meeting at 2pm. |
| Word | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Its | Belonging to it | The company changed its logo. |
| It's | Short for "it is" or "it has" | It's important to arrive on time. |
Memory trick: "It's" always means "it is" or "it has". If you cannot replace it with "it is", use "its" (no apostrophe).
| Word | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Know | To understand or be aware of | I know the answer. |
| No | The opposite of yes, or none | There are no parking spaces. |
| Now | At this moment | The meeting is starting now. |
Exam Tip: The most commonly confused words (there/their/they're, your/you're, its/it's) come up in almost every exam. If you master just these six words, you will avoid the mistakes that lose the most marks.
These words appear regularly in Level 1 writing and are often spelled incorrectly:
| Correct Spelling | Common Mistake | Memory Trick |
|---|---|---|

| separate | seperate | There is "a rat" in separate |
| definitely | definately | There is "finite" in definitely |
| accommodation | accomodation | Two c's and two m's |
| necessary | neccessary | One c, two s's — "one collar, two socks" |

| successfully | successfuly | Ends in "-fully" (two l's) |
These are words you might need to spell in the exam because they appear in workplace contexts:
