Effective time management is one of the most important factors in achieving a top grade on Paper 1 Section A. Many students know the content but run out of time or spend too long on lower-mark questions. This lesson provides a detailed strategy for maximising your marks within the time available.
Paper 1 lasts 1 hour 45 minutes and is divided into two sections:
| Section | Focus | Marks | Recommended Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Section A | Reading | 40 | ~60 minutes |
| Section B | Writing | 40 | ~45 minutes |
Within Section A, you should allocate your time according to the mark value of each question:
| Question | Marks | Recommended Time | Key Strategy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Q1 | 4 | 5 minutes | Quick retrieval — list four points and move on |
| Q2 | 8 | 10 minutes | 2–3 PEE paragraphs on language |
| Q3 | 8 | 10 minutes | 2–3 paragraphs on structure (whole text) |
| Q4 | 20 | 25 minutes | 3–4 PEEL paragraphs evaluating the statement |
| Reading | — | 10 minutes | Read and annotate the extract carefully |
Do not rush straight into the questions. Spending 10 minutes reading and annotating the extract will save you time later and improve the quality of every answer.
Exam Tip: Annotations are for your benefit — the examiner does not see your extract. But the time you invest in annotation directly improves your answers.

If you find yourself behind schedule, prioritise Q4. Here is an emergency strategy:
| Situation | What to Do |
|---|---|
| 5 minutes over on Q1–Q3 | Cut your Q4 to 3 paragraphs instead of 4 |
| 10 minutes over | Write 2 strong Q4 paragraphs with close analysis |
| Seriously behind | Write bullet-point notes for any unfinished questions — partial marks |
Exam Tip: Never leave a question blank. Even bullet-point notes can earn marks. It is better to write something imperfect than nothing at all.
| Mistake | Impact |
|---|---|
| Spending 15 minutes on Q1 | Wastes 10 minutes that should go to Q4 |
| Writing five paragraphs for Q2 | Depth of analysis matters more than quantity |
| Not reading the extract properly | Leads to inaccurate answers and wasted time re-reading later |
| Leaving Q4 until the last 10 minutes | Q4 is worth 20 marks — it needs at least 25 minutes |
| Spending time on perfect handwriting | Legibility matters, but speed matters more — find a balance |
