This is one of the most important topics in GCSE French because it allows you to demonstrate a wide range of tenses and grammar structures. Every exam board — AQA, Edexcel and OCR — expects you to discuss career ambitions, work experience, education plans and the qualities needed for different jobs. Exam tip: Many job titles in French follow predictable patterns: -eur → -euse (serveur/serveuse), -eur → -rice (acteur/actrice), -ien → -ienne (informaticien/informaticienne). Learning the patterns is more efficient than memorising every single word.

Model paragraph — work experience

L'année dernière, j'ai fait un stage dans un cabinet vétérinaire pendant une semaine. J'ai aidé les vétérinaires et j'ai accueilli les clients. C'était une expérience très enrichissante parce que j'ai appris beaucoup de choses sur les soins des animaux. Les collègues étaient sympathiques et patients. Ce stage m'a confirmé que je voudrais devenir vétérinaire à l'avenir. Cependant, j'ai trouvé les journées très longues et c'était parfois fatigant.

Last year, I did a week's work experience in a veterinary surgery. I helped the vets and I welcomed the clients. It was a very rewarding experience because I learnt a lot about animal care. The colleagues were friendly and patient. This placement confirmed for me that I would like to become a vet in the future. However, I found the days very long and it was sometimes tiring.

Exam tip: When describing work experience, use the passé composé for completed actions (j'ai aidé, j'ai appris) and the imperfect for descriptions and ongoing states (c'était, les collègues étaient). Mixing both tenses correctly is essential for top marks.
