Good time management is the difference between a student who finishes comfortably with time to check their work and one who runs out of time on the final 9-mark question — the question worth the most marks. This lesson breaks down the structure of each AQA GCSE Geography paper and gives you a minute-by-minute plan for exam day.
| Paper | Title | Duration | Total Marks | % of GCSE |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 | Living with the Physical Environment | 1 hour 30 minutes | 88 | 35% |
| Paper 2 | Challenges in the Human Environment | 1 hour 30 minutes | 88 | 35% |
| Paper 3 | Geographical Applications | 1 hour 15 minutes | 76 | 30% |
Total: 252 marks across 4 hours 15 minutes of examination.
Exam Tip: Paper 3 is 15 minutes shorter than Papers 1 and 2, but many students forget this and pace themselves as if they have 90 minutes. Be aware of the shorter time frame.

| Section | Topic | Marks | Recommended Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Section A | The Challenge of Natural Hazards | 33 | 33 minutes |
| Section B | The Living World | 25 | 25 minutes |
| Section C | Physical Landscapes in the UK | 30 | 30 minutes |
Total: 88 marks in 90 minutes — approximately 1 mark per minute.
Each section typically follows this pattern:
| Question Type | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Short answer (state, name, define) | 1–2 | 1–2 minutes |
| Describe (using a figure) | 2–4 | 2–4 minutes |
| Explain | 4–6 | 5–7 minutes |
| Assess / Evaluate / To what extent | 9 (+3 SPaG) | 12–15 minutes |
Exam Tip: The rule of 1 mark per minute is a reliable guide for all three papers. If a question is worth 4 marks, spend about 4 minutes on it. If it is worth 9 marks, spend about 12 minutes (including planning time).
| Section | Topic | Marks | Recommended Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Section A | Urban Issues and Challenges | 33 | 33 minutes |
| Section B | The Changing Economic World | 25 | 25 minutes |
| Section C | The Challenge of Resource Management | 30 | 30 minutes |
Total: 88 marks in 90 minutes.
Section C begins with some compulsory questions on resource management (approximately 9 marks), then you choose one optional topic:
| Option | Topic |
|---|---|
| Option 1 | Food Management |
| Option 2 | Water Management |
| Option 3 | Energy Management |
Make sure you know which option your school has studied. Answering the wrong option is a disaster.
Exam Tip: At the start of the exam, circle the option you are answering in Section C. This prevents you from accidentally starting the wrong set of questions.
| Section | Topic | Marks | Recommended Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Section A | Issue Evaluation | 37 | 40 minutes |
| Section B | Fieldwork | 39 | 35 minutes |
Total: 76 marks in 75 minutes — slightly more than 1 mark per minute.
Exam Tip: Paper 3 often feels rushed because students spend too long on Section A (Issue Evaluation). Set a strict time limit of 40 minutes for Section A and move on.

| 1:00 – 1:25 | Section C: Physical Landscapes in the UK (30 marks) |
| 1:25 – 1:30 | Check answers, correct SPaG errors |
| Time | Activity |
|---|---|

| 0:02 – 0:35 | Section A: Urban Issues and Challenges (33 marks) |
| 0:35 – 1:00 | Section B: The Changing Economic World (25 marks) |
| 1:00 – 1:25 | Section C: The Challenge of Resource Management (30 marks) |
| 1:25 – 1:30 | Check answers, correct SPaG errors |
| Time | Activity |
|---|---|
| 0:00 – 0:02 | Skim the paper, note question types |
| 0:02 – 0:40 | Section A: Issue Evaluation (37 marks) |
| 0:40 – 1:12 | Section B: Fieldwork (39 marks) |
| 1:12 – 1:15 | Check answers, correct SPaG errors |
If you realise you have less time than expected, use these emergency strategies:
A blank answer scores zero. A brief, imperfect answer might score 2–3 marks. Always attempt something.
If you have 10 minutes left and two questions remaining (a 2-mark and a 9-mark), spend 8 minutes on the 9-mark and 2 minutes on the 2-mark.
If you are running out of time on a 9-mark question, switch to bullet points. You may lose some SPaG marks, but you can still earn content marks.
If you cannot finish a 9-mark answer, skip to the conclusion. A strong conclusion that answers the question can earn marks even without fully developed body paragraphs.
Exam Tip: Practise completing full papers under timed conditions at least three times before each exam. This builds your internal clock so you instinctively know when to move on.
