The present tense is the most commonly used tense in GCSE German. You need to conjugate regular verbs, know the main irregular verbs, and handle separable verbs confidently. This lesson provides comprehensive coverage with tables, examples and exam tips.
German regular verbs follow a predictable pattern. Remove the -en ending from the infinitive to get the stem, then add the appropriate ending:
| Person | Ending | Conjugation | English |
|---|---|---|---|
| ich | -e | spiele | I play |
| du | -st | spielst | you play (informal) |
| er/sie/es | -t | spielt | he/she/it plays |
| wir | -en | spielen | we play |
| ihr | -t | spielt | you play (plural) |
| sie/Sie | -en | spielen | they/you (formal) play |
