Physical and Personality Descriptions

Describing people's appearance and character is a key GCSE German skill. You will need to describe yourself and others in speaking and writing, and understand descriptions in reading and listening. This lesson covers physical appearance vocabulary, personality adjectives, adjective agreement with sein (to be), and useful sentence structures for producing detailed descriptions.

Exam tip: Using comparatives (bigger, funnier) and superlatives (the biggest, the funniest) in your speaking or writing will impress the examiner and demonstrate a wide range of language.

4. Putting It Together — Extended Description

Here is a model paragraph combining physical and personality description:

Mein bester Freund heißt Lukas. Er ist sechzehn Jahre alt und ziemlich groß. Er hat kurze braune Haare und grüne Augen. Er trägt manchmal eine Brille. Lukas ist sehr lustig und wir lachen immer zusammen. Er ist auch hilfsbereit — wenn ich ein Problem habe, kann ich immer mit ihm reden. Manchmal ist er ein bisschen stur, aber das stört mich nicht. Wir verstehen uns wirklich gut und wir haben viel gemeinsam.

Exam tip: When describing someone, aim for at least 3–4 physical details and 3–4 personality traits. Use connectives like und (and), aber (but), auch (also) and obwohl (although) to link your ideas.

5. Adjective Agreement with Sein

When adjectives come after sein (to be), they do not change for gender or number:

• Mein Bruder ist nett. (My brother is nice.)
• Meine Schwester ist nett. (My sister is nice.)
• Meine Eltern sind nett. (My parents are nice.)

However, when adjectives come before a noun, they must agree with gender, case and number. This is covered fully in the Grammar course.
