This lesson covers all eleven components of fitness required by the Edexcel GCSE PE specification (1PE0). You must be able to define each component, give practical sporting examples, and explain why a particular component matters for a specific activity or position. The components are divided into health-related (5) and skill-related (6) categories, giving 11 in total when body composition is included among the health-related components.
Health-related components contribute to a person's overall health and well-being. They can be improved through regular exercise.
Definition: The ability of the heart and lungs to supply oxygen to the working muscles during sustained physical activity.
Definition: The ability of a muscle or group of muscles to repeatedly exert force over an extended period without fatiguing.
Definition: The range of movement possible at a joint.
Definition: The ratio of fat to fat-free mass (muscle, bone, organs, water) in the body.
Definition: The ability of a muscle to exert force against a resistance.
Edexcel requires you to know these types of strength:

Skill-related components are tied to specific sporting actions and are influenced by both genetics and training.
Definition: The ability to change direction quickly and with control while maintaining speed.
Definition: The ability to maintain the body's centre of mass over the base of support.
