This lesson covers injury prevention and the types of injury required by the Edexcel GCSE PE specification (1PE0). You must know the difference between acute and overuse (chronic) injuries, be able to name and describe specific examples of each, and understand how injuries can be prevented through appropriate measures.
Edexcel divides injuries into two categories: acute and overuse (chronic).
Definition: Injuries that occur suddenly as a result of a specific incident or trauma (e.g. a tackle, fall, collision or sudden movement).

| Sprain | Damage to a ligament (the tissue that connects bone to bone at a joint) through overstretching or tearing | A sudden twist or wrench of a joint beyond its normal range | An ankle sprain from landing awkwardly after a jump in basketball |
| Strain | Damage to a muscle or tendon (the tissue that connects muscle to bone) through overstretching or tearing | A sudden forceful contraction or overstretching of a muscle | A hamstring strain during sprinting |
Exam Tip: The most common confusion is between sprains and strains. Remember: sprain = ligament (bone to bone), strain = muscle/tendon (muscle to bone). A useful memory aid: SprAin = ligAment, strAin = muscle/tendon... or: "Sprains are at joints (ligaments), strains are in muscles."

Definition: Injuries that develop gradually over time as a result of repeated stress or overuse of a particular body part.
