The mosque (Arabic: masjid, meaning "place of prostration") is the centre of Muslim community life. It is much more than a place of worship — it serves as a school, community centre, and place of guidance. This lesson explores the features of a mosque and its role in the Muslim community.
| Feature | Description | Significance |
|---|---|---|
| Minaret | A tall tower from which the adhan (call to prayer) is made | Symbolises the presence of Islam; calls the faithful to prayer |
| Dome | A rounded roof over the prayer hall | Symbolises the universe and Allah's creation; helps amplify the imam's voice |
| Prayer hall (Musalla) | A large, open space for congregational prayer | No furniture — Muslims pray on the floor to show humility; allows many people to pray together |
| Mihrab | A niche in the wall indicating the Qiblah (direction of Makkah) | Ensures all worshippers face the Ka'bah during prayer |
| Minbar | A raised platform or pulpit used by the imam | The imam delivers the khutbah (sermon) during Friday prayers from here |
| Wudu area | Washing facilities for ritual ablution | Worshippers must be ritually clean before prayer |
| Shoe rack | Area for removing and storing shoes | Shoes are removed as a sign of respect and cleanliness |
| Calligraphy | Qur'anic verses written in beautiful Arabic script | Decorates the mosque without using images; reminds worshippers of Allah's word |
| Carpet | Prayer mats or carpeted floor with patterns indicating prayer rows | Provides clean surface for prostration; patterns help organise rows |
Exam Tip: Be able to identify and explain at least four features of a mosque and why they are important. The mihrab, minbar, minaret, and prayer hall are the most commonly asked about.

Mosques contain no images, statues, or pictures of Allah, Muhammad, or any living being. This is because:
The imam is the person who leads prayers and serves the Muslim community:
| Role | Description |
|---|---|
| Leading prayer | The imam stands at the front and leads congregational prayers |
| Delivering the khutbah | The imam gives a sermon during Friday prayers, discussing religious, social, and moral issues |
| Teaching | The imam teaches the Qur'an, Islamic studies, and Arabic |
| Counselling | The imam provides guidance on religious and personal matters |
| Officiating | The imam may officiate at weddings, funerals, and other ceremonies |
| Community leadership | The imam represents the Muslim community in interfaith and civic activities |
| Sunni | Shi'a |
|---|---|
| An imam is a prayer leader chosen by the community | The Imam (capital I) is a divinely appointed spiritual leader descended from Ali |
| Any knowledgeable Muslim can serve as imam | Shi'a Imams have special religious authority and spiritual insight |
| The role is primarily practical | The role is spiritual and political |
The mosque serves many functions beyond worship:
There are approximately 1,750 mosques in the UK, serving a Muslim population of around 3.9 million. UK mosques face unique challenges and opportunities:
| Challenge | Opportunity |
|---|---|
| Some communities may be suspicious or hostile towards mosques | Open days and interfaith events build understanding |
| Planning permission for new mosques can face opposition | Mosques contribute positively to local communities |
| Young Muslims may feel caught between mosque values and wider society | Mosques can provide safe spaces for young people to explore their identity |
| Language barriers — some sermons are not in English | Many mosques now offer English-language services and programmes |
The role of women in the mosque varies between communities:
