Being able to talk about the future is essential for GCSE Spanish. There are two main ways to express future plans: the near future (ir a + infinitive) and the simple future tense. This lesson covers both structures.
The near future is formed with the verb ir (to go) + a + infinitive. It expresses plans and intentions, similar to "going to" in English.
| Subject | ir | a + infinitive | English |
|---|---|---|---|
| yo | voy | a estudiar | I am going to study |
| tú | vas | a comer | you are going to eat |
| él/ella | va | a salir | he/she is going to go out |
| nosotros | vamos | a viajar | we are going to travel |
| vosotros | vais | a jugar | you all are going to play |
| ellos | van | a ver | they are going to watch |
Exam tip: The near future is the easiest way to express future plans. It is perfectly acceptable at all levels of GCSE and is often the best choice for foundation tier writing and speaking.
The simple future tense is formed by adding endings directly to the infinitive (for regular verbs). It is more formal than the near future and demonstrates higher-level grammar.
| Subject | Ending | hablar | comer | vivir |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| yo | -é | hablaré | comeré | viviré |
| tú | -ás | hablarás | comerás | vivirás |
| él/ella | -á | hablará | comerá | vivirá |
| nosotros | -emos | hablaremos | comeremos | viviremos |
| vosotros | -éis | hablaréis | comeréis | viviréis |
| ellos | -án | hablarán | comerán | vivirán |
Some verbs have irregular stems but use the SAME endings:
| Infinitive | Irregular stem | yo form | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| tener | tendr- | tendré | I will have |
| hacer | har- | haré | I will do/make |
| poder | podr- | podré | I will be able to |
| poner | pondr- | pondré | I will put |
| salir | saldr- | saldré | I will go out |
| venir | vendr- | vendré | I will come |
| decir | dir- | diré | I will say |
| haber | habr- | habrá | there will be |
| saber | sabr- | sabré | I will know |
| querer | querr- | querré | I will want |
| Spanish | English |
|---|---|
| mañana | tomorrow |
| pasado mañana | the day after tomorrow |
| la semana que viene | next week |
| el mes que viene | next month |
| el año que viene | next year |
| el próximo verano | next summer |
| en el futuro | in the future |
| dentro de cinco años | in five years' time |
| algún día | one day / someday |
| pronto | soon |
| Near Future (ir a + infinitive) | Simple Future |
|---|---|
| Voy a estudiar medicina. | Estudiaré medicina. |
| Vamos a viajar a España. | Viajaremos a España. |
| Va a llover mañana. | Lloverá mañana. |
| More informal / conversational | More formal / written |
| Plans and intentions | Predictions and formal plans |
Both are perfectly correct — using the simple future demonstrates higher-level grammar.
En el futuro tengo muchos planes. Primero, voy a hacer mis exámenes de GCSE y espero sacar buenas notas. El año que viene estudiaré español, matemáticas e inglés en el instituto. Dentro de cinco años iré a la universidad para estudiar ingeniería porque me apasiona la tecnología. Después de la universidad trabajaré en una empresa internacional y viajaré por todo el mundo. Algún día me gustaría vivir en España o en Latinoamérica. Sé que no será fácil, pero estoy muy motivado/a.
