Near Future and Simple Future Tense

Being able to talk about the future is essential for GCSE Spanish. There are two main ways to express future plans: the near future (ir a + infinitive) and the simple future tense. This lesson covers both structures.

1. The Near Future (El futuro próximo: ir a + infinitivo)

The near future is formed with the verb ir (to go) + a + infinitive. It expresses plans and intentions, similar to "going to" in English.

Examples

• Voy a estudiar esta noche. — I am going to study tonight.
• Vamos a ir a España en verano. — We are going to go to Spain in summer.
• ¿Qué vas a hacer el fin de semana? — What are you going to do at the weekend?
• No va a llover mañana. — It is not going to rain tomorrow.

Exam tip: The near future is the easiest way to express future plans. It is perfectly acceptable at all levels of GCSE and is often the best choice for foundation tier writing and speaking.

2. The Simple Future Tense (El futuro simple)

The simple future tense is formed by adding endings directly to the infinitive (for regular verbs). It is more formal than the near future and demonstrates higher-level grammar.

5. Model Paragraph — Future Plans

En el futuro tengo muchos planes. Primero, voy a hacer mis exámenes de GCSE y espero sacar buenas notas. El año que viene estudiaré español, matemáticas e inglés en el instituto. Dentro de cinco años iré a la universidad para estudiar ingeniería porque me apasiona la tecnología. Después de la universidad trabajaré en una empresa internacional y viajaré por todo el mundo.
