Present Tense (Regular and Irregular Verbs, Ser vs Estar)

The present tense is the most fundamental tense in Spanish. You use it to describe what you do regularly, what is happening now, facts and opinions. This lesson covers all three verb groups, key irregular verbs, stem-changing verbs and the ser vs estar distinction.

1. Regular Verb Conjugation

Spanish verbs are divided into three groups based on their infinitive ending: -ar, -er, -ir.

-AR Verbs (e.g. hablar — to speak)

3. Stem-Changing Verbs

Some verbs have a vowel change in the stem for all forms EXCEPT nosotros and vosotros.

Exam tip: The present tense is the foundation for all other tenses. Master the regular patterns first, then learn the most common irregulars (ser, estar, tener, ir, hacer, poder, querer). Stem-changing verbs follow predictable patterns — learn the change type and you can conjugate any verb in the group.

Worked example — conjugating one verb of each pattern, then composing a paragraph

Task: Conjugate three verbs through all six persons of the present tense — one regular -er, one stem-changing (o → ue) and the irregular ser — then deploy them in a coherent paragraph that also distinguishes ser from estar.

Verb 1 — comer (regular -er):

Verb 2 — poder (o -> ue stem change):

The change drops in nosotros and vosotros — a classic AQA Higher trap.
