The subjunctive is a verb mood used for wishes, doubts, emotions, recommendations and hypothetical situations. At GCSE, you do not need to master the subjunctive fully, but using some key subjunctive forms at higher tier can significantly boost your marks.
The subjunctive is not a tense — it is a mood. While the indicative (normal tenses) describes facts and reality, the subjunctive expresses subjectivity: wishes, doubts, emotions, necessity, and hypothetical situations.
| Trigger phrase | Example | English |
|---|---|---|
| Es importante que… | Es importante que estudies. | It is important that you study. |
| Es necesario que… | Es necesario que todos reciclemos. | It is necessary that we all recycle. |
| Quiero que… | Quiero que vengas a mi fiesta. | I want you to come to my party. |
| Espero que… | Espero que haga buen tiempo. | I hope the weather is good. |
| No creo que… | No creo que sea fácil. | I don't think it is easy. |
| Es posible que… | Es posible que llueva. | It is possible that it will rain. |
| Cuando + future action | Cuando sea mayor, viajaré. | When I am older, I will travel. |
The present subjunctive is formed by taking the yo form of the present indicative, dropping the -o, and adding "opposite" endings:
| Subject | Ending | Example |
|---|---|---|
| yo | -e | hable |
| tú | -es | hables |
| él/ella | -e | hable |
| nosotros | -emos | hablemos |
| vosotros | -éis | habléis |
| ellos | -en | hablen |
| Subject | Ending | Example (comer) | Example (vivir) |
|---|---|---|---|
| yo | -a | coma | viva |
| tú | -as | comas | vivas |
| él/ella | -a | coma | viva |
| nosotros | -amos | comamos | vivamos |
| vosotros | -áis | comáis | viváis |
| ellos | -an | coman | vivan |
Exam tip: Think of it as "opposite vowels": -ar verbs use -e endings (like -er verbs), and -er/-ir verbs use -a endings (like -ar verbs).
| Infinitive | yo subjunctive | Full meaning |
|---|---|---|
| ser | sea | (that) I be |
| estar | esté | (that) I be |

The imperfect subjunctive is needed for Type 2 si clauses (hypothetical). It is formed from the ellos form of the preterite, replacing -ron with -ra endings.
| Subject | Ending | tener (tuvieron) | poder (pudieron) | ser (fueron) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| yo | -ra | tuviera | pudiera | fuera |
| tú | -ras | tuvieras | pudieras | fueras |
