The subjunctive is a verb mood used for wishes, doubts, emotions, recommendations and hypothetical situations. At GCSE, you do not need to master the subjunctive fully, but using some key subjunctive forms at higher tier can significantly boost your marks.
The subjunctive is not a tense — it is a mood. While the indicative (normal tenses) describes facts and reality, the subjunctive expresses subjectivity: wishes, doubts, emotions, necessity, and hypothetical situations.
