Talking about your free time and hobbies is a core GCSE Spanish topic. You need to describe activities you enjoy, give opinions about them, say how often you do them and discuss sports. This lesson covers all key vocabulary, the verb jugar (with its preposition), opinion phrases and connectives.

Exam tip: "Jugar" is followed by al (a + el) with masculine sports: "jugar al fútbol", "jugar al tenis". With feminine sports, use a la: "jugar a la petanca". "Hacer" is used with activities: "hacer natación", "hacer ciclismo". Learn which verb goes with which activity.

En mi tiempo libre me encanta hacer deporte. Juego al fútbol dos veces a la semana con mi equipo y los sábados tenemos un partido. Me gusta mucho porque es emocionante y me mantiene en forma. También me gusta escuchar música — sobre todo el pop y el rock. Los fines de semana suelo salir con mis amigos. A veces vamos al cine o al centro comercial, y de vez en cuando quedamos en casa de alguien para ver películas y comer pizza. Lo que menos me gusta es hacer los deberes, pero entiendo que es necesario. Nunca juego a los videojuegos porque creo que es una pérdida de tiempo.
Exam tip: Use
soler+ infinitive ("suelo salir" = I usually go out) to demonstrate higher-level language. It shows habitual action and impresses examiners.

En mi tiempo libre me apasiona hacer deporte. Desde que tenía siete años juego al fútbol en un club local, y ahora entreno tres veces a la semana. Los sábados por la mañana tenemos partido, lo cual me encanta porque el ambiente en el equipo es fantástico. El año pasado ganamos la liga regional, y guardo ese recuerdo con mucho cariño.
Cuando era más pequeño, solía coleccionar cromos de futbolistas y pasaba horas organizándolos en álbumes. También hacía judo, aunque lo dejé a los doce años porque ya no me divertía. Ahora prefiero los deportes de equipo a los individuales porque me gusta socializar mientras hago ejercicio.
Además del deporte, otro pasatiempo que me encanta es tocar la guitarra. Empecé a aprender hace tres años con un profesor particular y ya puedo tocar unas veinte canciones. Me gusta especialmente el rock y, de vez en cuando, toco con unos amigos en el garaje de casa — soñamos con formar una banda algún día. También me encanta leer, sobre todo novelas de fantasía, aunque admito que últimamente leo menos porque estoy muy ocupado con los exámenes.

In my free time I am passionate about doing sport. Since I was seven I have played football at a local club, and now I train three times a week. On Saturday mornings we have a match, which I love because the atmosphere in the team is fantastic. Last year we won the regional league, and I treasure that memory fondly.
When I was younger, I used to collect footballer cards and would spend hours organising them in albums. I also did judo, though I gave it up at twelve because I was no longer enjoying it. Now I prefer team sports to individual ones because I like to socialise while I exercise.
As well as sport, another hobby I love is playing the guitar. I started learning three years ago with a private teacher and I can already play about twenty songs. I especially like rock and, from time to time, I play with some friends in the garage at home — we dream of forming a band one day. I also love reading, especially fantasy novels, although I admit that recently I read less because I am very busy with exams.
What I least like doing in my free time is watching television for hours, because it seems like a waste of time to me. I prefer to be active or to learn something new. If I had more time, I would learn to surf, because I live near the coast and I love the sea. I wish I had the talent and discipline to combine all my hobbies, but the truth is you have to prioritise. In the future I am going to keep playing football and I hope to play the guitar at a small concert before I turn twenty.
Grammar and vocabulary commentary:
Misconception: Students often say "yo jugo fútbol" — there are two errors here. First, the verb is "jugar", which in yo form is "juego" (stem change o→ue). Second, Spanish says "jugar AL fútbol" with the preposition "a" + "el" = "al". So: "juego al fútbol". Also, remember that "jugar" is used for sports/games but "tocar" is used for musical instruments — never say "jugo la guitarra". Another trap: "deporte" is masculine ("el deporte"), but in plural it is "los deportes". Do not confuse "pasar tiempo" (to spend time) with "pasarlo bien" (to have a good time). Finally, "hobby" in Spanish is "pasatiempo" or "afición" — avoid the anglicism "hobi".

Llevo tres años practicando y, aunque al principio me resultaba frustrante, ahora ya puedo interpretar canciones bastante complejas.
