Shopping is a practical GCSE Spanish topic often tested through role-plays and transactional scenarios. You need to buy items, ask about sizes and prices, express preferences about clothes and deal with problems. This lesson covers essential shop vocabulary, clothing, role-play language and cultural notes.

In Spain, many small specialist shops (tiendas de barrio) still exist alongside supermarkets and shopping centres. Markets (mercados) are important for buying fresh produce, and many towns have a weekly mercadillo (street market) selling clothes, food and household items.
Spanish shops and businesses may close between 2pm and 5pm for the siesta period, especially in smaller towns. However, large shopping centres and chain stores typically remain open all day.
Read the following Higher-tier AQA response about a shopping trip and fashion preferences.
Spanish model text (~310 words):
La semana pasada fui de compras a un centro comercial enorme en las afueras de mi ciudad con mi mejor amiga Laura. Teníamos dos objetivos: ella necesitaba un vestido para la boda de su prima, y yo quería unas zapatillas de deporte nuevas, porque las mías estaban destrozadas.
