Welcome to your first GL 11+ Non-Verbal Reasoning practice paper! NVR tests your ability to see patterns, sequences, and relationships between shapes — no words needed.
In a sequence question, you are given a series of shapes that follow a pattern. You must work out what comes next.
Look for these changes between each step:
| What to look for | Example |
|---|---|
| Rotation | Shape turns 90 degrees clockwise each time |
| Shading | Alternates between black, grey, and white |
| Size | Shape grows or shrinks each step |
| Number | One more dot/line/shape is added each time |
| Position | Shape moves to a different corner each step |
| Addition/removal | A new element appears or an old one disappears |
Q1. A square appears in four frames. In frame 1, a small black circle is in the top-left corner. In frame 2, it has moved to the top-right corner. In frame 3, it is in the bottom-right corner. Where will it be in frame 4? (1 mark)
Q2. Frame 1 shows a triangle pointing up. Frame 2 shows it pointing right. Frame 3 shows it pointing down. What does frame 4 show? (1 mark)
Q3. Frame 1 has 1 dot. Frame 2 has 3 dots. Frame 3 has 5 dots. Frame 4 has 7 dots. How many dots in frame 5? (1 mark)
Q4. Frame 1: a white circle. Frame 2: a circle with horizontal stripes. Frame 3: a black circle. Frame 4: a circle with horizontal stripes. What is frame 5? (1 mark)
Q5. Frame 1: one small square inside a large square. Frame 2: two small squares inside. Frame 3: three small squares inside. The small squares also rotate 45 degrees each frame. How many small squares in frame 4, and are they rotated? (2 marks)
Q6. Each frame has a pentagon. Inside the pentagon, an arrow points in a direction. Frame 1: arrow points up. Frame 2: arrow points up-right. Frame 3: arrow points right. Frame 4: arrow points down-right. Where does the arrow point in frame 5? (1 mark)
Q7. Frame 1: a large circle with a small triangle inside at the top. Frame 2: the triangle has moved to the right side. Frame 3: the triangle is at the bottom. Also, the triangle gets slightly larger each frame. Describe frame 4. (2 marks)
Q8. A sequence shows: circle, circle, triangle, circle, circle, triangle, circle, circle, ___. What comes next? (1 mark)
In odd-one-out questions, you are shown five shapes. Four share a common feature; one is different. Find the odd one out.
| Feature | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Number of sides | Are most shapes pentagons but one is a hexagon? |
| Shading | Are most shapes white but one is grey? |
| Symmetry | Do most have line symmetry but one does not? |
| Rotation | Are most in the same orientation but one is rotated? |
| Size | Are most the same size but one is different? |
| Internal features | Do most have a dot inside but one does not? |
| Curved vs straight | Are most made of straight lines but one has curves? |
Q9. Five shapes: (A) square with a dot in the centre, (B) triangle with a dot in the centre, (C) circle with a dot in the centre, (D) pentagon with a dot in the centre, (E) hexagon with NO dot. Which is the odd one out? (1 mark)
Q10. Five shapes: (A) right-pointing arrow, (B) right-pointing arrow, (C) left-pointing arrow, (D) right-pointing arrow, (E) right-pointing arrow. Which is the odd one out? (1 mark)
Q11. (A) A black circle, (B) a black triangle, (C) a black square, (D) a white hexagon, (E) a black pentagon. Which is the odd one out? (1 mark)
Q12. (A) Shape with 1 line of symmetry, (B) shape with 1 line of symmetry, (C) shape with 1 line of symmetry, (D) shape with NO lines of symmetry, (E) shape with 1 line of symmetry. Which is the odd one out? (1 mark)
Q13. (A) Small circle inside a square, (B) small circle inside a triangle, (C) small circle inside a pentagon, (D) small square inside a circle, (E) small circle inside a hexagon. Which is the odd one out? (2 marks)
Q14. (A) A triangle with a horizontal line through it, (B) a square with a horizontal line through it, (C) a circle with a horizontal line through it, (D) a pentagon with a vertical line through it, (E) a hexagon with a horizontal line through it. Which is the odd one out? (1 mark)
Q15. (A) Two overlapping circles, (B) two overlapping squares, (C) two overlapping triangles, (D) two separate circles, (E) two overlapping pentagons. Which is the odd one out? (1 mark)
Q16. (A) Arrow pointing up with a circle at its base, (B) arrow pointing right with a circle at its base, (C) arrow pointing down with a circle at its base, (D) arrow pointing left with a square at its base, (E) arrow pointing up-right with a circle at its base. Which is the odd one out? (1 mark)
In analogy questions, two shapes are related. You must find the shape that relates to a third shape in the same way.
Format: Shape A is to Shape B as Shape C is to ???
