Synonyms & Antonyms
Synonyms & Antonyms
Welcome to your first Verbal Reasoning lesson! In this lesson, you will learn about synonyms and antonyms — two of the most important word skills you will need for the GL 11+ exam. Understanding these will help you in many other question types too.
What Is a Synonym?
A synonym is a word that has the same or very similar meaning as another word.
| Word | Synonym |
|---|---|
| happy | joyful |
| big | large |
| quick | fast |
| brave | courageous |
| begin | start |
| angry | furious |
| calm | peaceful |
| clever | intelligent |
Top tip: Two words do not need to mean exactly the same thing — they just need to be very close in meaning.
What Is an Antonym?
An antonym is a word that means the opposite of another word.
| Word | Antonym |
|---|---|
| happy | sad |
| big | small |
| quick | slow |
| brave | cowardly |
| begin | end |
| hot | cold |
| dark | light |
| generous | selfish |
Why Do Synonyms and Antonyms Matter?
In the GL 11+ exam, you might be asked to:
- Pick the word closest in meaning to a given word (synonym question).
- Pick the word most opposite in meaning to a given word (antonym question).
- Find the pair of words that are synonyms or antonyms from a list of five words.
These skills also help you with cloze passages, odd one out, and word analogy questions.
Worked Example 1: Synonym Question
Question: Select the word that is closest in meaning to enormous.
A) tiny B) average C) huge D) narrow
Step-by-step:
- Read the target word: enormous — this means very, very big.
- Look at each option:
- A) tiny — this means very small. That is the opposite!
- B) average — this means normal-sized. Not close enough.
- C) huge — this means very big. That matches!
- D) narrow — this describes width, not size in general.
- Answer: C) huge
Worked Example 2: Antonym Question
Question: Select the word that is most opposite in meaning to generous.
A) kind B) wealthy C) mean D) gentle
Step-by-step:
- Read the target word: generous — this means willing to give and share.
- Look at each option:
- A) kind — this is similar to generous, not opposite.
- B) wealthy — being rich is not the opposite of being generous.
- C) mean — this means unwilling to share. That is the opposite!
- D) gentle — this is about being soft or careful, not about giving.
- Answer: C) mean
Worked Example 3: Finding a Synonym Pair
Question: Find the two words that are closest in meaning.
ancient modern historic fresh young
Step-by-step:
- Think about what each word means:
- ancient = very old
- modern = new, up-to-date
- historic = from the past, old and important
- fresh = new, recently made
- young = not old
- Which two are closest? ancient and historic — both mean something old.
- Answer: ancient and historic
Worked Example 4: Finding an Antonym Pair
Question: Find the two words that are most opposite in meaning.
expand explode contract extend grow
Step-by-step:
- Think about what each word means:
- expand = get bigger
- explode = burst apart
- contract = get smaller
- extend = make longer
- grow = get bigger
- Which two are most opposite? expand (get bigger) and contract (get smaller).
- Answer: expand and contract

Words meaning "big"
enormous, huge, vast, immense, gigantic, colossal, massive
Words meaning "small"
tiny, minute, miniature, petite, microscopic, slight

Building Your Vocabulary: Common Antonym Pairs

| create | destroy |
| visible | invisible |
| victory | defeat |

Common Traps to Avoid
Trap 1: Words that look similar but mean different things
Do not confuse:
- accept (to receive) and except (to leave out)
- affect (to change) and effect (the result)
- compliment (praise) and complement (go well with)
Trap 2: Words with multiple meanings
The word light can mean:
- Not heavy (antonym: heavy)
- Not dark (antonym: dark)
- To set on fire (synonym: ignite)
Always read the sentence carefully to work out which meaning is being used.
Trap 3: Picking a word that is related but not a synonym
If asked for a synonym of hot, you might see options like summer or fire. These are related to hot, but they do not mean the same as hot. The correct answer would be something like boiling or scorching.
Prefixes That Create Antonyms
You can often make an antonym by adding a prefix to the beginning of a word:
| Prefix | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| un- | unhappy | not happy |
| dis- | disagree | not agree |
| im- | impossible | not possible |
| in- | invisible | not visible |
| ir- | irregular | not regular |
| il- | illegal | not legal |
| mis- | misunderstand | understand wrongly |
| non- | non-fiction | not fiction |
Top tip: If you are stuck on an antonym question, check whether adding a prefix to one of the options gives you the target word — or vice versa!
Practice Strategy
- Read widely — the more books you read, the more words you will know.
- Use a thesaurus — when you learn a new word, look up its synonyms and antonyms.
- Make flashcards — write the word on one side and its synonym/antonym on the other.
- Play word games — games like Scrabble and crosswords build vocabulary.
- Practise under timed conditions — in the real exam, you will need to be quick!
Quick Quiz Yourself
