Synonyms: Shades of Meaning

In this lesson, you will learn that synonyms are rarely exactly the same. Every word has its own personality — its own shade of meaning, level of formality, and emotional feel. Understanding these differences is a key skill for the 11+ exam, where you may be asked to choose the "closest" synonym or rank words by intensity.

What Is a Synonym?

A synonym is a word that has the same or similar meaning as another word.

• big → large, huge, enormous, gigantic, vast
• happy → glad, pleased, delighted, ecstatic, jubilant
• said → whispered, muttered, exclaimed, declared, announced

But notice: "big" and "enormous" do not mean exactly the same thing. "Enormous" is much stronger than "big." This is what we mean by shades of meaning.
