In this lesson, you will learn that synonyms are rarely exactly the same. Every word has its own personality — its own shade of meaning, level of formality, and emotional feel. Understanding these differences is a key skill for the 11+ exam, where you may be asked to choose the "closest" synonym or rank words by intensity.
A synonym is a word that has the same or similar meaning as another word.
But notice: "big" and "enormous" do not mean exactly the same thing. "Enormous" is much stronger than "big." This is what we mean by shades of meaning.
Questions might ask you to choose the word that is closest in meaning to another word. If you understand the subtle differences between synonyms, you can pick the best answer.
Example question: Which word is closest in meaning to "furious"?
The answer is c) enraged, because both "furious" and "enraged" describe extremely strong anger, while "annoyed" and "irritated" are much milder.
Choosing the right shade of meaning makes your writing more precise and powerful. "The boy walked to school" is fine, but "The boy trudged to school" tells us much more — he walked slowly and reluctantly.
A word intensity ladder shows synonyms arranged from mildest to strongest. This is a fantastic way to understand shades of meaning.
