This is the final lesson — and it is about the moment of commitment. You have done the research, considered the options, sought advice, and weighed the trade-offs. Now it is time to make your choice, submit your options form, and move forward with confidence.
By this point, if you have worked through this course, you should have:
If you have done all of this, you are more prepared than the vast majority of students making this decision. Trust the work you have put in.
Run through this checklist one last time before submitting your choices:
| Question | Yes/No | If No... |
|---|---|---|
| Does my combination include all required subjects for my target university courses? | You need to adjust — this is non-negotiable | |
| Have I checked at least three universities for each course I might apply to? | Requirements vary; checking one university is not enough | |
| Am I aware of any subjects my target courses exclude? | Some courses list subjects they do not accept | |
| If I change my mind about my degree, does this combination still give me options? | Consider whether you are over-specialising |
| Question | Yes/No | If No... |
|---|---|---|
| Do I have Grade 7+ at GCSE in all my chosen subjects (or equivalent evidence for new subjects)? | You may struggle; speak honestly with the subject teacher | |
| Have my teachers confirmed they think I can cope with A-Level in each subject? | Their experience with hundreds of students is valuable | |
| Am I aware of how the A-Level content differs from GCSE in each subject? | Speak to current A-Level students to get a realistic picture |
| Question | Yes/No | If No... |
|---|---|---|
| Am I genuinely interested in at least two of my three subjects? | You will struggle to sustain effort for two years | |
| Can I imagine studying these subjects for 15+ hours per week (class + homework + revision)? | Consider whether another subject might engage you more | |
| Is at least one of my subjects something I would read about or discuss voluntarily? | Enthusiasm in at least one subject makes the whole experience more sustainable |
If, after all your analysis, you genuinely cannot separate two combinations, use these tie-breakers:
flowchart TD
A[Cannot decide between Option A and Option B] --> B{Tie-breaker 1: Which keeps more doors open?}
B -->|Option A| C[Choose Option A]
B -->|Option B| D[Choose Option B]
B -->|Equal| E{Tie-breaker 2: Which are you more excited about?}
E -->|Option A| C
E -->|Option B| D
E -->|Equal| F{Tie-breaker 3: Which teachers have a better track record?}
F -->|Option A| C
F -->|Option B| D
F -->|Equal| G["Flip a coin. Seriously. If both options are equally strong after this much analysis, either will serve you well."]
The coin flip is not a joke. If two options are genuinely indistinguishable after thorough analysis, they are both good choices. The decision anxiety is causing more harm than making the "wrong" choice between two good options ever could.
