Individual subjects are important, but the combination of subjects you choose matters too. A well-chosen combination creates synergy — the subjects support and reinforce each other, making your overall workload more manageable and your academic profile more coherent. A poorly chosen combination can create unnecessary difficulty or send a confusing signal to universities about your academic direction.
This lesson examines which combinations work well, which to approach with caution, and how to think about the number of A-Levels you take.
Biology + Chemistry + Mathematics
This is the gold standard for medical school applications. Biology and Chemistry are required by virtually all medical schools, and Mathematics is required or preferred by several. The three subjects also complement each other — mathematical skills help with Chemistry calculations, and Chemistry supports understanding of biochemical processes in Biology.
Biology + Chemistry + Psychology
A solid alternative if Maths is not your strength. Psychology provides understanding of human behaviour that is relevant to medical practice, and it is well-regarded by most medical schools as a third subject. However, check specific university requirements — some medical schools prefer Maths.
