The IELTS Academic Reading test is one of four components of the IELTS Academic exam. Understanding the test format inside out is the first step towards achieving Band 7+. This lesson provides a comprehensive overview of the structure, timing, scoring, and question types you will encounter.
The Academic Reading test consists of three passages with a total of 40 questions. You have exactly 60 minutes to complete all three sections. There is no additional transfer time — your answers must be written on the answer sheet within those 60 minutes.
IELTS Academic Reading — At a Glance
═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════
Section 1 Passage 1 ~13 questions Easiest
Section 2 Passage 2 ~13 questions Moderate
Section 3 Passage 3 ~14 questions Most difficult
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Total 3 passages 40 questions 60 minutes
All three passages are taken from books, journals, magazines, and newspapers. The texts are written for a non-specialist audience but are academically oriented. Topics range from science and technology to history, sociology, and the environment.
Band 7+ Strategy: Do not assume you must complete the passages in order. If Passage 3 is your strength (e.g., you excel at matching headings), consider starting there while your concentration is highest.
The IELTS Academic Reading test uses a variety of question types, and each passage may include more than one type. The main question types are:
Important: The instructions for each question set specify a word limit (e.g., "NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS"). Exceeding this limit means your answer is marked wrong, even if the content is correct.
Your raw score out of 40 is converted to a band score from 1 to 9. The conversion is not published officially but approximate thresholds based on published practice tests are:
Raw Score → Band Score (approximate)
═══════════════════════════════════════
39–40 → Band 9
37–38 → Band 8.5
35–36 → Band 8
33–34 → Band 7.5
30–32 → Band 7
27–29 → Band 6.5
23–26 → Band 6
19–22 → Band 5.5
15–18 → Band 5
To achieve Band 7, you need approximately 30–32 correct answers out of 40. This means you can afford to get 8–10 questions wrong while still reaching your target.
Band 7+ Strategy: Focus on accuracy over completion. It is better to answer 35 questions carefully and get 30+ right than to rush through all 40 and score below 30.
With 60 minutes for 40 questions across 3 passages, time management is critical. A common recommendation is:
Suggested Time Allocation
═══════════════════════════════════════
Passage 1: 17 minutes (easiest)
Passage 2: 20 minutes (moderate)
Passage 3: 23 minutes (hardest)
─────────────────────────────────────
Total: 60 minutes
However, some candidates prefer an equal split of 20 minutes per passage. The key is to practise under timed conditions and find the allocation that works best for you.
Unlike the Listening test, there is no extra transfer time for Reading. You must write your answers on the answer sheet as you go, or leave 2–3 minutes at the end to transfer them. Most Band 7+ candidates write directly on the answer sheet to save time.
For most question types, reading the questions first gives you a clear purpose when you read the passage. You know what information to look for, which makes your reading more efficient.
In both the questions and the passage, underline keywords — especially names, dates, numbers, and technical terms. These act as signposts that help you locate relevant information quickly.
IELTS examiners are experts at paraphrasing. The correct answer almost never uses the exact same words as the passage. You must recognise synonyms, antonyms, and restructured sentences.
Example:
Every answer must be based solely on the information in the passage. Even if you know a statement is factually true, if the passage does not support it, the answer is "Not Given."
If you misspell a word in your answer, it is marked wrong. When transferring words from the passage, copy them exactly.
| Mistake | Consequence | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Spending too long on one question | Running out of time for later questions | Set a time limit per question (~1.5 min) and move on |
| Exceeding the word limit | Answer marked wrong | Always check the instruction before writing |
| Using outside knowledge | Choosing wrong answer | Base every answer strictly on the passage |
| Not reading instructions carefully | Losing easy marks | Read every instruction word by word |
| Leaving answers blank | Guaranteed zero marks | Always guess if unsure — there is no penalty |
The IELTS Academic Reading test rewards candidates who combine strong reading comprehension with efficient time management and question-type awareness. By understanding the format thoroughly before you begin your preparation, you can focus your practice on the areas that will have the greatest impact on your score. In the following lessons, we will break down each question type and build the specific skills you need for Band 7+.
