"The number of tourists rose sharply from 2010 to 2015."
"There was a sharp rise in the number of tourists between 2010 and 2015."
"The period from 2010 to 2015 saw a significant increase in tourist numbers."
Band 7+ Tip: Vary your sentence structures. Do not use the same pattern for every trend description. Mix verbs and nouns to demonstrate grammatical range.
Always include data to support your descriptions. Use these prepositions correctly:
| Preposition | Usage | Example |
|---|---|---|
| at | Specific number | peaked at 500 |
| from...to | Range/change | rose from 200 to 500 |
| by | Amount of change | increased by 300 |
| between...and | Time period | between 2010 and 2015 |
| of | Following a noun | a rise of 300 |
| to | Reaching a level | grew to 500 |
When a line graph has multiple lines, you need to compare them. Use comparative and superlative structures.
| Comparing two items | |
|---|---|
| higher / lower than | more / fewer than |
| twice as many as | half as much as |
| significantly more than | marginally less than |
