Tables present numerical data in rows and columns. They can contain a large amount of information, which makes them one of the most challenging visual types in IELTS Academic Writing Task 1. The key skill is selecting the most important data rather than trying to describe everything. This lesson teaches you how to analyse, organise, and describe tables at Band 7+ level.
A typical IELTS table has:
Example Table: Average annual salary (in US$) by country and sector, 2022
═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
Technology Education Healthcare
USA 95,000 55,000 72,000
UK 65,000 42,000 58,000
Germany 70,000 48,000 62,000
Japan 60,000 38,000 55,000
India 18,000 8,000 12,000
Unlike line graphs or pie charts, tables:
Band 7+ Strategy: Spend more time analysing a table (3 minutes) than you would a graph (2 minutes). The extra minute of analysis will make your writing significantly stronger.
Before writing, answer these questions:
Body 1: Countries with the highest salaries (USA, Germany, UK) Body 2: Countries with the lowest salaries (Japan, India)
Body 1: Technology and Healthcare salaries (higher-paying sectors) Body 2: Education salaries (lower-paying sector)
Body 1: The general pattern (Technology > Healthcare > Education in all countries) Body 2: Notable exceptions and comparisons between countries
Band 7+ Tip: Choose the organisation that allows you to make the clearest comparisons and show the strongest patterns.
The overview for a table should identify the dominant patterns without citing specific numbers.
Example: "Overall, the technology sector offered the highest average salaries in all five countries, while education consistently paid the least. There was a substantial disparity between salaries in developed nations and those in India across all three sectors."
Phrase Example
═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
the highest / lowest figure "The highest figure was in the USA."
ranked first / last "The USA ranked first in all sectors."
followed by "The USA was followed by Germany."
was X times higher / lower than "US salaries were five times higher than India's."
exceeded / surpassed "Technology salaries exceeded education salaries."
lagged behind "India lagged behind the other four countries."
