Understanding how IELTS scores work — and how GT scoring differs from Academic — is essential for strategic preparation. Many candidates aim vaguely for "a high score" without knowing exactly how many correct answers they need, or how each component contributes to their overall band. This lesson eliminates that uncertainty.
Your IELTS result is reported as an Overall Band Score from 0 to 9 in half-band increments (e.g. 5.0, 5.5, 6.0, 6.5, 7.0). This is calculated as the average of your four component scores (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking), rounded to the nearest half band.
| Average | Rounded Band |
|---|---|
| 6.1 | 6.0 |
| 6.25 | 6.5 |
| 6.625 | 6.5 |
| 6.75 | 7.0 |
| 6.875 | 7.0 |
The rule: if the average ends in .25, it rounds UP to the next half band. If it ends in .125 or less, it rounds DOWN.
Calculation Example:
═══════════════════
Listening: 7.5
Reading: 7.0
Writing: 6.5
Speaking: 7.0
───────────────────
Average: 7.0 (28 ÷ 4 = 7.0)
Overall: 7.0
