Understanding the differences between IELTS General Training (GT) and IELTS Academic is the first step towards choosing the right test and preparing effectively. Many candidates waste weeks studying the wrong material because they do not fully grasp how the two tests diverge.
IELTS was designed to serve two distinct purposes:
Band 7+ Tip: Immigration programmes such as the Australian General Skilled Migration typically require GT scores. University admissions almost always require Academic. Check your specific requirements before you register.
Before exploring the differences, it is important to recognise what the two tests share:
| Component | Academic | General Training |
|---|---|---|
| Listening | Identical — same test, same recording, same 40 questions | Identical |
| Speaking | Identical — same three-part interview | Identical |
| Total test time | Approximately 2 hours 45 minutes | Approximately 2 hours 45 minutes |
| Band scale | 0–9 in half-band increments | 0–9 in half-band increments |
| Validity | 2 years from the test date | 2 years from the test date |
The Listening and Speaking modules are exactly the same paper for both versions. This means that any Listening or Speaking preparation material works for both tests.
This is where the biggest divergence occurs.
Academic Reading:
General Training Reading:
GT Reading Difficulty Curve
═══════════════════════════════════════
Section 1 ████░░░░░░ Easy — everyday survival
Section 2 ██████░░░░ Medium — workplace contexts
Section 3 █████████░ Hard — general interest, long text
Band 7+ Tip: GT Reading Section 3 can be just as challenging as an Academic passage. Do not assume GT Reading is "easy" — the scoring is adjusted upward, meaning you need more correct answers for the same band score.
Academic Writing:
General Training Writing:
A critical and often misunderstood aspect: the raw-score-to-band-score conversion is different for GT and Academic Reading and Writing.
| Band Score | Academic (correct out of 40) | GT (correct out of 40) |
|---|---|---|
| 5.0 | 15 | 15 |
| 6.0 | 23 | 23 |
| 6.5 | 26 | 30 |
| 7.0 | 30 | 34 |
| 7.5 | 32 | 36 |
| 8.0 | 35 | 38 |
Notice that at Band 7.0, you need 30 correct answers in Academic but 34 in GT. This means GT candidates must answer more questions correctly to achieve the same band. The reason is that GT Section 1 and Section 2 texts are easier, so the threshold is higher.
The band descriptors for Task Achievement differ slightly:
The marking criteria for Task 2 are identical across both versions.
Decision Flowchart
═══════════════════════════════════════
Are you applying for university or professional registration?
YES → Take Academic
NO → Are you migrating or seeking work?
YES → Take General Training
NO → Check your specific institution's requirements
Some organisations accept either version. Always check the specific requirements of your target institution or immigration programme.
GT Reading requires near-perfection. Missing more than 6 questions out of 40 will drop you below Band 7. Practice under timed conditions until you consistently score 34+ out of 40.
GT Writing Task 1 is not easier — it is different. Many candidates underestimate letter writing. You must demonstrate range of vocabulary, appropriate tone, and clear organisation. A Band 7 letter is not a casual email — it is a well-structured piece of writing.
Do not mix up preparation materials. Academic Task 1 skills (describing graphs) are irrelevant for GT. Focus on letter formats, tone, and register.
Listening and Speaking are your equaliser. Since these are identical across both tests, strong performance here contributes directly to your overall band without the GT scoring penalty that applies to Reading.
| Myth | Reality |
|---|---|
| "GT is easier than Academic" | GT Reading requires more correct answers for the same band. The overall difficulty is comparable. |
| "GT Writing is just writing letters" | Task 2 is an essay, identical in format to Academic. Letters also require sophisticated language. |
| "Universities only accept Academic" | Some institutions accept GT for certain programmes. Always verify. |
| "Band scores mean the same thing" | A Band 7 in GT Reading and a Band 7 in Academic Reading represent the same level of English ability, but the path to achieving them differs. |
In the following lessons, we will work through each GT-specific component in detail, building the skills you need for Band 7+.
