Articles (a, an, the) and determiners are among the smallest words in English, yet they cause some of the biggest problems for IELTS candidates. Errors with articles are so common that examiners are specifically trained to notice them. Mastering articles will not only improve your Grammatical Range and Accuracy score but also make your writing sound significantly more natural.

There is a hospital near my house. She wrote an essay about climate change.
She is a teacher. That was an interesting lecture.
I'll be back in a minute. (= one minute)
a university (starts with /juː/, a consonant sound) ✅ an hour (the "h" is silent, starts with /aʊ/, a vowel sound) ✅ a European country ✅ an MBA ✅
I read a book about IELTS. The book was very helpful.
Please close the door. (the door of this room) Where is the nearest hospital?
The sun, the moon, the earth, the internet, the environment, the government (of a specific country)
She is the most talented student in the class. This was the first time I had visited London.
The elderly, the rich, the poor, the unemployed, the young
Use "the" with:
Do NOT use "the" with:
Ø Computers have transformed modern life. ✅ The computers have transformed modern life. ❌ (implies specific computers)
Ø Education is the key to economic development. ✅ The education is the key to economic development. ❌ (unless referring to a specific education system)
I had Ø breakfast at 7 a.m. She plays Ø tennis every weekend. He is studying Ø mathematics.
Ø Freedom is a fundamental human right. Ø Technology has changed the way we communicate.
