Articles (a, an, the) and determiners are among the smallest words in English, yet they cause some of the biggest problems for IELTS candidates. Errors with articles are so common that examiners are specifically trained to notice them. Mastering articles will not only improve your Grammatical Range and Accuracy score but also make your writing sound significantly more natural.
| Article | Type | Use |
|---|---|---|
| a | Indefinite | Before singular countable nouns starting with a consonant sound |
| an | Indefinite | Before singular countable nouns starting with a vowel sound |
| the | Definite | Before specific nouns (singular, plural, or uncountable) |
| Ø (zero) | No article | Before plural/uncountable nouns used in a general sense |
