Understanding how IELTS scores work is essential for setting targets, tracking progress, and knowing exactly what examiners are looking for. This lesson explains the 9-band scale, how overall scores are calculated, what each band level means in practice, and the score requirements you are likely to encounter.
IELTS uses a 9-band scale to measure English language proficiency. Each of the four skills (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) receives a separate band score, and these are averaged to produce your Overall Band Score.
| Band | Skill Level | Description |
|---|---|---|
| 9 | Expert user | Full command of the language. Appropriate, accurate and fluent with complete understanding. |
| 8 | Very good user | Fully operational command with only occasional unsystematic inaccuracies. Handles complex detailed argumentation well. |
| 7 | Good user | Operational command with occasional inaccuracies, inappropriate usage and misunderstandings. Generally handles complex language well and understands detailed reasoning. |
| 6 | Competent user | Generally effective command despite some inaccuracies and misunderstandings. Can use and understand fairly complex language, particularly in familiar situations. |
| 5 | Modest user | Partial command. Copes with overall meaning in most situations, though likely to make many mistakes. Should be able to handle basic communication in own field. |
| 4 | Limited user | Basic competence limited to familiar situations. Frequent problems in understanding and expression. Not able to use complex language. |
| 3 | Extremely limited user | Conveys and understands only general meaning in very familiar situations. Frequent breakdowns in communication. |
| 2 | Intermittent user | No real communication possible except for the most basic information using isolated words or short formulae in familiar situations. |
| 1 | Non-user | Essentially has no ability to use the language beyond possibly a few isolated words. |
| 0 | Did not attempt | No assessable information provided. |
Band scores are reported in whole and half bands. This means your score for each skill can be:
1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, 4, 4.5, 5, 5.5, 6, 6.5, 7, 7.5, 8, 8.5, 9
| Skill | How the Score Is Determined |
|---|---|
| Listening | Number of correct answers out of 40, converted to a band score using a conversion table |
| Reading | Number of correct answers out of 40, converted to a band score using a conversion table |
| Writing | Examiner assessment using four criteria, each scored 0–9, then averaged |
| Speaking | Examiner assessment using four criteria, each scored 0–9, then averaged |
Your Overall Band Score is the arithmetic mean (average) of your four individual band scores, rounded to the nearest whole or half band.
| Average | Rounded To |
|---|---|
| Ends in .0 | That whole number (e.g. 7.0 → 7.0) |
| Ends in .25 | Rounded up to the next half band (e.g. 6.25 → 6.5) |
| Ends in .5 | That half band (e.g. 7.5 → 7.5) |
| Ends in .75 | Rounded up to the next whole band (e.g. 6.75 → 7.0) |
Example 1:
| Skill | Band Score |
|---|---|
| Listening | 7.5 |
| Reading | 7.0 |
| Writing | 6.5 |
| Speaking | 7.0 |
| Average | (7.5 + 7.0 + 6.5 + 7.0) ÷ 4 = 7.0 |
| Overall Band Score | 7.0 |
Example 2:
| Skill | Band Score |
|---|---|
| Listening | 8.0 |
| Reading | 7.0 |
| Writing | 6.5 |
| Speaking | 7.0 |
| Average | (8.0 + 7.0 + 6.5 + 7.0) ÷ 4 = 7.125 |
| Overall Band Score | 7.0 (7.125 rounds down) |
Example 3:
| Skill | Band Score |
|---|---|
| Listening | 7.5 |
| Reading | 7.0 |
| Writing | 6.5 |
| Speaking | 7.5 |
| Average | (7.5 + 7.0 + 6.5 + 7.5) ÷ 4 = 7.125 |
| Overall Band Score | 7.0 |
Example 4:
| Skill | Band Score |
|---|---|
| Listening | 8.0 |
| Reading | 7.5 |
| Writing | 6.5 |
| Speaking | 7.0 |
| Average | (8.0 + 7.5 + 6.5 + 7.0) ÷ 4 = 7.25 |
| Overall Band Score | 7.5 (7.25 rounds up) |
Strategy for Band 7+: Understanding the rounding rules is crucial for strategic preparation. If your target is 7.0 Overall, you need an average of at least 6.75 across the four skills. This means you could achieve 7.0 with scores of 7.5, 7.0, 6.5 and 6.0 (average 6.75, rounds to 7.0). Identify your weaker skills early and allocate more study time to them.
For Listening and Reading, your band score is determined by the number of correct answers out of 40. The conversion tables vary slightly between test versions, but the following are typical ranges:
| Correct Answers (out of 40) | Band Score |
|---|---|
| 39–40 | 9.0 |
| 37–38 | 8.5 |
| 35–36 | 8.0 |
| 33–34 | 7.5 |
| 30–32 | 7.0 |
| 27–29 | 6.5 |
| 23–26 | 6.0 |
| 20–22 | 5.5 |
| 16–19 | 5.0 |
| Correct Answers (out of 40) | Band Score |
|---|---|
| 39–40 | 9.0 |
| 37–38 | 8.5 |
| 35–36 | 8.0 |
| 33–34 | 7.5 |
| 30–32 | 7.0 |
| 27–29 | 6.5 |
| 23–26 | 6.0 |
| 20–22 | 5.5 |
| 15–19 | 5.0 |
