Since 2018, IELTS has been available in a computer-delivered format alongside the traditional paper-based test. Both formats are valid and produce the same qualification, but the experience is different. This lesson helps you decide which format suits you best and how to prepare for each.
| Feature | Paper-Based | Computer-Delivered |
|---|---|---|
| Content | Identical | Identical |
| Difficulty | Same | Same |
| Band scoring | Same | Same |
| Listening | Audio through speakers; write on question paper, then transfer to answer sheet | Audio through headphones; type answers directly on screen |
| Reading | Read passages in a booklet; write answers on an answer sheet | Read passages on screen; type or click answers |
| Writing | Handwrite on paper | Type on a computer keyboard |
| Speaking | Face-to-face with examiner | Face-to-face with examiner (same for both) |
| Results | 13 calendar days | 3–5 business days |
| Availability | Typically 4 dates per month | Often multiple sessions per week |
| Test centres | Wide range of locations | Fewer locations but growing |
| Aspect | Detail |
|---|---|
| Audio delivery | Played through speakers in the room |
| During the test | Write answers on the question paper as you listen |
| Transfer time | 10 minutes at the end to transfer answers to the official answer sheet |
| Answer format | Handwritten on a printed answer sheet |
| Aspect | Detail |
|---|---|
| Audio delivery | Played through individual headphones (you control the volume) |
| During the test | Type answers directly into the on-screen answer fields |
| Transfer time | 2 minutes only (to review and finalise) |
| Answer format | Typed into text fields on screen |
| Advantage | Paper-Based | Computer-Delivered |
|---|---|---|
| Transfer time | 10 minutes to check and correct answers | Only 2 minutes — much less review time |
| Audio quality | Room speakers — can be affected by acoustics | Headphones — clearer, individual volume control |
| Writing answers | Can write quickly without looking at the paper | Must type accurately; unfamiliar keyboards can slow you down |
| Noise isolation | Can hear other candidates' movements | Headphones provide some isolation |
Strategy for Band 7+: If you rely heavily on the 10-minute transfer time to check spelling and correct answers, the paper-based test may be safer. If you have good typing speed and prefer headphone audio quality, computer-delivered is often better. The reduced transfer time on computer means you must enter answers as you listen — do not plan to write them later.
| Aspect | Detail |
|---|---|
| Text presentation | Printed in a booklet — you can annotate, underline, circle key words |
| Questions | Printed alongside the passages |
| Answers | Written on a separate answer sheet |
| Navigation | Flip pages to move between the passage and questions |
| Aspect | Detail |
|---|---|
| Text presentation | Displayed on screen — split screen with passage on one side and questions on the other |
| Questions | Displayed alongside the passage on a split screen |
| Answers | Typed or selected (radio buttons, drag-and-drop) on screen |
| Navigation | Scroll within the passage; click between question groups |
| Highlighting | You can highlight text on screen (similar to paper annotation) |
| Advantage | Paper-Based | Computer-Delivered |
|---|---|---|
| Annotation | Natural — circle, underline, write notes in margins | Limited — can highlight but cannot write notes next to the text |
| Overview | Can see the whole passage at a glance by spreading pages | Must scroll — harder to get an overview of the whole text |
| Question navigation | Flip between pages | Click between question groups; split screen shows passage and questions simultaneously |
| Answer transfer | Must transfer answers from question paper to answer sheet (takes time, risk of errors) | Answers entered directly — no transfer needed |
Strategy for Band 7+: Many candidates find paper-based Reading easier because they can physically interact with the text. However, the computer format eliminates the answer-transfer step, which can save 5–7 minutes. If you are comfortable reading on screen, the computer format is often more time-efficient.
This is where the two formats differ most significantly in terms of candidate experience.
| Aspect | Detail |
|---|---|
| Writing method | Handwrite with a pencil on ruled paper |
| Word count | You must count words manually (or estimate) |
| Editing | Cross out and rewrite — can look messy |
| Planning | Write notes on the question paper |
| Legibility | Your handwriting must be legible to the examiner |
