Knowing exactly what happens before, during, and after test day removes unnecessary anxiety and allows you to focus entirely on demonstrating your English ability. This lesson covers the complete process from registration to receiving your results.
You can register for IELTS through three main organisations:
| Organisation | Website | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| British Council | britishcouncil.org/exam/ielts | Available in most countries; often the most test centres |
| IDP: IELTS Australia | ielts.idp.com | Available in most countries; identical test to British Council |
| Cambridge Assessment English | cambridgeenglish.org | Administers the test in some regions |
Registration is typically done online. You will need:
| When | Action |
|---|---|
| 4–6 weeks before test | Ideal registration window — ensures you get your preferred date and centre |
| 2–3 weeks before test | Late registration — some centres may still have availability |
| Less than 2 weeks | Most centres are full; late registration fees may apply |
| After registration closes | You must wait for the next available test date |
Strategy for Band 7+: Register early. Popular test centres fill up quickly, especially in peak periods (September–November for January university deadlines, March–May for September intake). If your preferred date is unavailable, check neighbouring cities.
After registering, you will receive a confirmation email with:
| Task | Details |
|---|---|
| Confirm your Speaking test time | Check your email or online account — the Speaking test may be on a different day |
| Plan your journey | Visit the test centre location in advance if possible; plan to arrive 30 minutes early |
| Check your passport | Ensure it is the same passport you registered with and that it has not expired |
| Prepare your stationery | For paper-based tests, bring pencils (HB), an eraser, and a sharpener. For computer-based tests, you typically need nothing — equipment is provided |
| Review test rules | No phones, watches (some centres), food or drink (except water) in the test room |
| Get a good night's sleep | Research consistently shows that sleep has a greater impact on cognitive performance than last-minute study |
| Time | What Happens |
|---|---|
| 30 minutes before start | Arrive at the test centre |
| Check-in | Present your passport; your photo is taken (or checked against the one you submitted); you are assigned a seat number |
| Security check | All personal belongings (phone, wallet, watch, bag) are stored in a designated area outside the test room |
| Entering the test room | You receive a pencil and eraser (paper test) or are assigned a computer station (computer test) |
| Allowed | Not Allowed |
|---|---|
| Your passport | Mobile phone (even switched off) |
| A clear/transparent water bottle (some centres) | Smart watch or any watch (some centres) |
| Prescribed medication (with prior notification) | Food or snacks |
| Pencil case or bag | |
| Any electronic devices | |
| Notes or study materials |
Key Point: If you bring a mobile phone, you will be asked to switch it off and leave it in a storage area. If a phone is found in the test room (even switched off), your test may be invalidated.
