Part 1 is designed to settle you in and assess your ability to speak about everyday, familiar subjects. While it may seem easy, many candidates underperform here because they give answers that are too short, too rehearsed, or too unfocused. This lesson provides the strategies and techniques you need to perform confidently at Band 7+ level in Part 1.
The examiner asks questions from a script on 2-3 topics. Each topic has approximately 4 questions. Topics are personal and familiar:
Common Part 1 Topics
═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════
Home / Accommodation Work / Studies
Family Free time / Hobbies
Friends Music / Films
Food / Cooking Sports / Exercise
Weather Shopping
Reading Travel / Holidays
Technology Transport
Sleep Neighbours / Community
Q: Do you like cooking? A: "Yes, I do."
This gives the examiner nothing to assess.
Q: Do you like cooking? A: "Well, that's a really interesting question. I've been thinking about cooking a lot recently because my mother used to cook for me when I was a child and she made wonderful meals. Actually, I remember one time when she made a special dish for my birthday and all my family came over and..." (continues for 40 seconds)
The examiner will interrupt you, and your coherence score suffers because you have wandered off-topic.
Q: Do you like cooking? A: "Yes, I really enjoy it, actually. I find it quite therapeutic after a long day at work. I tend to cook simple meals during the week — stir-fries, pasta, that sort of thing — but at the weekends I like to experiment with more elaborate recipes."
This is 3 sentences, takes about 15-20 seconds, and demonstrates vocabulary, fluency, and coherence.
For Part 1, use this three-part framework:
Start with a clear, direct answer. Do not hedge or avoid the question.
Give one reason, explanation, or detail that develops your answer.
Add one more sentence — an example, a comparison, a time reference, or an additional detail.
Q: What type of music do you enjoy?
A (Answer): I'm quite into indie rock, actually. E (Extend): I think I was drawn to it during university because my flatmates were always playing bands like Arctic Monkeys and The Strokes. D (Develop): I still listen to that kind of music when I'm commuting or working out — it really helps me stay energised.
Part 1 questions often give you natural opportunities to use different tenses. Take them.
Q: Do you enjoy reading? A: "I've always been an avid reader — my parents encouraged me to read from a very young age. [present perfect + past simple] These days, I tend to read mostly non-fiction — biographies, popular science, that kind of thing. [present simple] I'm actually reading a fascinating book about space exploration at the moment. [present continuous]"
Discourse markers make your speech sound fluent and natural, not rehearsed:
| Marker | Purpose | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Actually | Adding genuine information | "I actually prefer tea to coffee." |
| To be honest | Giving a candid opinion | "To be honest, I don't exercise as much as I should." |
| I suppose | Hedging slightly | "I suppose I'd say my neighbourhood is fairly quiet." |
| Well | Thinking time (natural) | "Well, I think it depends on the situation." |
| I mean | Clarifying or rephrasing | "I mean, it's not that I dislike it — I just don't have time." |
| I'd say | Giving an approximate or considered answer | "I'd say I cook about four times a week." |
Idiomatic expressions demonstrate natural English use, but only if they fit naturally:
