Reading: ___ ___ ___ □ High □ Med □ Low
Writing: ___ ___ ___ □ High □ Med □ Low
Speaking: ___ ___ ___ □ High □ Med □ Low
Overall: ___ ___ ___
Component with biggest gap: ________________
Estimated weeks to close gap: ________________
Based on published research and test preparation data:
| Current Score | Target Score | Typical Improvement Time |
|---|---|---|
| 5.0 → 5.5 | +0.5 band | 4–8 weeks of focused study |
| 5.5 → 6.0 | +0.5 band | 6–10 weeks |
| 6.0 → 6.5 | +0.5 band | 8–12 weeks |
| 6.5 → 7.0 | +0.5 band | 10–16 weeks |
| 7.0 → 7.5 | +0.5 band | 12–20 weeks |
These are estimates. Improvement speed depends on study intensity, language exposure, and the specific component.
Note: Improving from 6.5 to 7.0 typically takes longer than improving from 5.0 to 5.5. Higher bands require more nuanced skills.
If you believe your score does not reflect your performance, you can request a remark.
| Step | Details |
|---|---|
| Deadline | Within 6 weeks of the test date |
| Cost | Approximately £60–80 (varies by centre and country) |
| What to request | You can remark one component, several, or all four |
| Timeline | Results typically available within 2–4 weeks |
| Score change | Your score can go UP, stay the SAME, or go DOWN |
| Fee refund | Refunded if any component score changes |
Good reasons to remark:
Poor reasons to remark:
While IELTS does not publish detailed remark statistics, anecdotal evidence from test preparation professionals suggests:
Band 7+ Tip: If you scored Writing 6.5 and need 7.0, a remark is worth considering — especially if your practice scores were consistently 7.0+. The cost is modest and is refunded if your score changes.
If a remark does not help (or you choose not to remark), retaking is the next option.
