The Week Before the Exam: Final Preparation
The last seven days before your IELTS test are not the time for intensive study. Your English level will not change significantly in one week. Instead, this period is about consolidation, confidence-building, and logistical preparation. This lesson provides a day-by-day plan.
The Principle: No New Material
In the final week, do NOT:
- Start a new grammar textbook.
- Learn 200 new vocabulary words.
- Try a completely new essay structure.
- Panic about topics you have not covered.
In the final week, DO:
- Review strategies and techniques you already know.
- Do timed practice under exam conditions.
- Rest, sleep, and manage stress.
- Prepare all logistics (ID, test centre location, equipment).
Day-by-Day Plan
Day 7 (One Week Before)
Full Practice Test Under Exam Conditions
- Listening: 30 minutes + 10 minutes transfer
- Reading: 60 minutes
- Writing: 60 minutes (20 + 40)
- No phone, no dictionary, no pauses
- Use official Cambridge or British Council practice materials
After the test:
- Mark Listening and Reading.
- Review every wrong answer — identify the reason (carelessness, vocabulary, time pressure).
- Estimate your Writing band based on the criteria.
- Record your scores.
Day 6
Review Listening and Reading Errors
- For each wrong answer from yesterday's test, write down:
- What the correct answer was
- Why you got it wrong
- What you would do differently
Review Writing Task 1 Templates
- Practise writing one letter (formal, semi-formal, or informal) in exactly 20 minutes.
- Check register consistency, bullet point coverage, and word count.
Day 5
Focus on Your Weakest Component
Based on your scores so far, identify your weakest component and do a targeted 60-minute session:
| If Weakest Is... | Do This |
|---|
| Listening | Listen to one full Listening test. Focus on Section 3 and 4 strategies. |
| Reading | Complete one full Reading test. Focus on T/F/NG and time management. |
| Writing | Write one full Task 2 essay in 40 minutes. Focus on idea development. |
| Speaking | Record yourself answering 10 Part 1 questions, 2 Part 2 topics, and 5 Part 3 questions. |
Day 4
Speaking Practice
- Do a full mock speaking test (11–14 minutes) with a study partner, tutor, or recording.
- Part 1: 5 questions, 2–3 sentences each.
- Part 2: Plan for 1 minute, speak for 2 minutes.
- Part 3: 4–5 abstract questions, 30–60 seconds each.
Review Writing Task 2 Structure
- Write an essay plan (not a full essay) for 3 different prompts.
- Each plan should take 5 minutes.
- Check: thesis clear? Two main arguments? Supporting examples?
Day 3
Half Practice Test
- Choose either Listening + Reading OR Writing + Speaking.
- Do it under timed conditions.
- Review any errors.
