Superlatives (le plus, le moins, le meilleur)

While comparatives compare two things, superlatives express the extreme — the most, the least, the best, the worst. French superlatives follow logical patterns, with a few irregular forms that echo the comparative irregulars.

Forming the Superlative

Superiority (the most / the ...est)

le/la/les + plus + adjective (+ de + group)

French	English
Marie est la plus grande de la classe.	Marie is the tallest in the class.
C'est le plus beau monument de Paris.	It is the most beautiful monument in Paris.
Ce sont les plus beaux jardins du monde.	These are the most beautiful gardens in the world.
C'est la plus longue rivière de France.	It is the longest river in France.

Inferiority (the least)

le/la/les + moins + adjective (+ de + group)

French	English
C'est le moins cher des hôtels.	It is the least expensive of the hotels.
C'est la moins difficile des questions.	It is the least difficult of the questions.
Ce sont les moins intéressants des livres.	These are the least interesting of the books.

Position of the Superlative

The superlative follows the same placement rules as the adjective itself:

BANGS adjectives (before the noun)

If the adjective normally goes before the noun, the superlative does too:

• C'est le plus grand bâtiment de la ville. — It is the tallest building in the city.
• C'est la plus jolie fille de l'école. — She is the prettiest girl in the school.
• C'est le plus petit pays d'Europe. — It is the smallest country in Europe.
• C'est le meilleur restaurant de la ville. — It is the best restaurant in the city.

Other adjectives (after the noun)

If the adjective normally goes after the noun, the superlative does too, and the article is repeated:

• C'est le film le plus intéressant de l'année. — It is the most interesting film of the year.
• C'est la ville la plus dangereuse du pays. — It is the most dangerous city in the country.
• Ce sont les étudiants les plus sérieux de la classe. — These are the most serious students in the class.
• C'est le problème le plus difficile de l'examen. — It is the most difficult problem on the exam.

Notice: When the superlative comes after the noun, the definite article appears twice — once before the noun and once before plus/moins: le film le plus intéressant.

The Group: de (in/of)

In superlative expressions, de (not dans or en) is used to express "in" or "of" when referring to the group:

French	English
de la classe	in the class
du monde (de + le)	in the world
de France	in France
de l'année	of the year
de tous	of all
des trois (de + les)	of the three

Examples:

• C'est le plus grand pays du monde. — It is the biggest country in the world.
• C'est la plus belle ville de France. — It is the most beautiful city in France.
• C'est le meilleur élève de la classe. — He is the best student in the class.

Irregular Superlatives

The same adjectives that have irregular comparatives have irregular superlatives:

Bon → Le meilleur (the best)

Do NOT say le plus bon:
