The second group of French verbs are those with infinitives ending in -ir. Regular -ir verbs follow a consistent pattern that includes the characteristic insertion of -iss- in the plural forms. This group is smaller than the -er group but includes many commonly used verbs.
To conjugate a regular -ir verb:
| Subject | Ending | Example: finir (to finish) |
|---|---|---|
| je | -is | je finis |
| tu | -is | tu finis |
| il/elle/on | -it | il finit |
| nous | -issons | nous finissons |
| vous | -issez | vous finissez |
| ils/elles | -issent | ils finissent |
Key feature: The -iss- in the plural forms (nous, vous, ils/elles) is the hallmark of regular -ir verbs. If a verb ending in -ir does NOT have -iss- in these forms, it is irregular (like partir, dormir, venir).
