Fricative consonants are produced by narrowing the airflow through a tight gap in the mouth, creating a characteristic "hissing" or "buzzing" sound. Unlike stops, fricatives can be held continuously.
A fricative is made by bringing two parts of the mouth close together (but not completely shut) so that air rushing through creates turbulence — think of the "ssss" sound or the "ffff" sound. Georgian has a rich set of fricatives at various positions.
