Conjunctions & Word Order

German conjunctions have dramatic effects on word order. Coordinating conjunctions keep normal order. Subordinating conjunctions send the verb to the end.

Coordinating Conjunctions (No Change)

Conjunction	Meaning	Example
und	and	Ich lerne Deutsch und sie lernt Spanisch.
aber	but	Er ist nett, aber manchmal laut.
oder	or	Kommst du, oder bleibst du?
denn	because	Ich bleibe, denn ich bin krank.
sondern	but rather	Nicht dumm, sondern faul.

Subordinating Conjunctions (Verb to End!)

Conjunction	Meaning	Example
weil	because	...weil ich krank bin.
dass	that	...dass er Deutsch spricht.
wenn	if / when	Wenn es regnet, bleibe ich zu Hause.
ob	whether	...ob er kommt.
obwohl	although	...obwohl er krank ist.
als	when (past)	Als ich jung war...
während	while	Während er schläft...
nachdem	after	Nachdem er gegessen hat...
bevor	before	Bevor du gehst...
damit	so that	...damit ich bestehe.
bis	until	...bis er kommt.
seit/seitdem	since	Seit er hier wohnt...

Subordinate Clause First

When the subordinate clause starts the sentence, the main clause verb comes right after the comma:

Weil vs Denn

Both mean "because" — different word order:
