After haben and sein, the next group of verbs whose Präteritum is commonly used in everyday spoken German is the modal verbs. Germans strongly prefer saying "ich konnte" (I could) and "ich musste" (I had to) rather than the clunky Perfekt forms. In this lesson, you will learn all six modal verbs in the Präteritum.
