Konjunktiv II is the more widely used of the two German subjunctive moods. While Konjunktiv I is confined mostly to formal reported speech, Konjunktiv II appears in everyday spoken and written German. It is used for hypothetical situations, polite requests, wishes, unreal conditions, and as a replacement for Konjunktiv I when forms overlap with the indicative.
| Use | Example |
|---|---|
| Unreal conditions (if-clauses) | Wenn ich reich wäre, würde ich reisen. (If I were rich, I would travel.) |
| Wishes | Ich wünschte, ich hätte mehr Zeit. (I wish I had more time.) |
| Polite requests | Könnten Sie mir helfen? (Could you help me?) |
| Suggestions | Wir könnten ins Kino gehen. (We could go to the cinema.) |
| Replacing Konjunktiv I | Sie sagten, sie hätten keine Zeit. (They said they had no time.) |
| Expressing regret | Wenn ich das nur gewusst hätte! (If only I had known!) |
