Nobody wants to face an emergency while travelling, but being prepared with the right vocabulary can make a critical difference. This lesson covers emergency phrases, dealing with the police, reporting theft and loss, and handling common travel problems in German-speaking countries.
These are the most important phrases to know. Memorise them before you travel.

Important: Stay calm and speak clearly. Even if your German is not perfect, emergency responders will understand key words like Krankenwagen, Polizei, Unfall, and Notfall.

Tip: 112 works across the entire EU, even from a locked mobile phone without a SIM card. Save it in your phone before you travel.

Polizist: Guten Tag. Wie kann ich Ihnen helfen?
Touristin: Guten Tag. Ich möchte eine Anzeige erstatten. Man hat mir die Handtasche gestohlen.
Polizist: Das tut mir leid. Wo und wann ist das passiert?
Touristin: Heute Morgen, gegen 10 Uhr, in der U-Bahn-Station Alexanderplatz.
Polizist: Können Sie beschreiben, was in der Tasche war?
Touristin: Mein Portemonnaie mit etwa 200 Euro Bargeld, meine Kreditkarte, mein Handy und meine Hotelschlüsselkarte.
Polizist: Haben Sie den Täter gesehen?
Touristin: Nein, leider nicht. Ich habe es erst bemerkt, als ich in den Zug eingestiegen bin.
Polizist: Ich nehme alles auf. Haben Sie einen Ausweis dabei?
Touristin: Ja, meinen Reisepass habe ich noch. Der war in meiner Jackentasche.
Polizist: Gut. Ich erstelle den Polizeibericht. Den brauchen Sie für Ihre Versicherung. Haben Sie Ihre Kreditkarte schon sperren lassen?
Touristin: Oh nein, noch nicht!
Polizist: Das sollten Sie sofort tun. Die Sperrnummer für Kreditkarten ist 116 116.
Touristin: Vielen Dank.
