Essere (to be) is the most frequently used verb in Italian and one of the most irregular. Its present tense forms bear no resemblance to regular verb patterns, so each form must be memorised individually.
| Person | Italian | English |
|---|---|---|
| io | sono | I am |
| tu | sei | you are (informal) |
| lui/lei/Lei | è | he/she is, you are (formal) |
| noi | siamo | we are |
| voi | siete | you all are |
| loro | sono | they are |
Note: The io form and the loro form are both sono. Context usually makes the meaning clear, but you can include the pronoun when needed: Io sono insegnante. vs Loro sono insegnanti.
