The two most important verbs in Italian are essere (to be) and avere (to have). They are used constantly in everyday speech, and they also serve as the auxiliary (helper) verbs for forming past tenses. Understanding when to use each one is fundamental to building correct Italian sentences.
Essere and avere are:
Use essere for:

Use avere for:

This is a key difference from English! Italian uses avere (to have) where English uses "to be":

| Quanti anni hai? | How old are you? (Lit: How many years do you have?) |
| Ho venticinque anni. | I am twenty-five years old. (Lit: I have twenty-five years.) |
| Mia nonna ha ottant'anni. | My grandmother is eighty years old. |
Italian expresses many physical sensations with avere + noun, where English uses "to be" + adjective:

| Ho sonno. | I am sleepy. (Lit: I have sleepiness.) |
| Ho paura. | I am afraid. (Lit: I have fear.) |
| Ho fretta. | I am in a hurry. (Lit: I have haste.) |
| Ho ragione. | I am right. (Lit: I have reason.) |
| Ho torto. | I am wrong. (Lit: I have wrong.) |
| Ho voglia di... | I feel like... (Lit: I have desire for...) |
| Ho bisogno di... | I need... (Lit: I have need of...) |
| Ho mal di testa. | I have a headache. |
