Every noun in Italian is either masculine (maschile) or feminine (femminile). Unlike English, where nouns are generally gender-neutral, Italian grammar requires you to know the gender of each noun because it affects the articles, adjectives, and pronouns used with it.
In Italian, gender is not just a grammatical label — it shapes every sentence you build. The article you place before a noun, the adjective you use to describe it, and even some verb forms depend on whether the noun is masculine or feminine.
For example:
Tip: Learning noun gender from the start will save you enormous effort later. Always memorise a noun together with its article: il libro, not just libro.
The most reliable way to guess gender is by looking at the ending of a noun.

| -o | il libro | the book |
| -o | il ragazzo | the boy |
| -o | il cielo | the sky |
| -o | il museo | the museum |
| -o | il tavolo | the table |
| -ore | il colore | the colour |
| -iere | il cameriere | the waiter |
| -one | il sapone | the soap |

| -tà | la città | the city |

Many Italian nouns end in -e, and these can be either masculine or feminine. There is no reliable rule — you must learn the gender along with the article.
