Knowing the days of the week, months of the year, and seasons is essential for making plans, understanding schedules, and talking about time in Italian. One important rule: unlike English, Italian does not capitalise days, months, or seasons.
The Italian week starts on Monday, as in most European countries.
| Italian | English | Origin |
|---|---|---|
| lunedì | Monday | Luna (Moon) |
| martedì | Tuesday | Marte (Mars) |
| mercoledì | Wednesday | Mercurio (Mercury) |
| giovedì | Thursday | Giove (Jupiter) |
| venerdì | Friday | Venere (Venus) |
| sabato | Saturday | Sabbath |
| domenica | Sunday | Dominus (Lord) |
Tip: All days from Monday to Friday end in -dì, which comes from the Latin word dies (day). Sabato and domenica have different origins.
